Welcome to Event #1 of the 2004 King Motorsports Street Mod Cup. One word can sum up today’s event – “Variable”. For past couple of weeks the entire state of Wisconsin has been getting pounded by thunderstorm after thunderstorm and today was no different.
SM was running heats 1 and 3. Milwaukee SCCA runs a pretty tight ship and we started heat 1 promptly at 9:30am. The course was wet for the first set of runs, but the clouds were starting to break a little bit. The course layout was fairly technical with a number of high speed sweepers, a short slalom, and a cool drag race style finishing stretch. With changing conditions all day this made for a very fun day – every run was a little bit different.
Everyone in the class was on their “rains” for this first go around. Will Ostrowski laid down the fastest run in a borrowed WRX – 55.853. Clayton Goldsmith was second, but pretty far behind with a 57.112 followed by Mike Sheskey who turned in a 57.709.
The WRX two driver duo of Ostrowski and Bedard got things figured out – Will backed up his first run with a 55.322 and Phil Bedard was really moving with a 53.658 but he collected one cone along the way – still good enough for second spot. The course was beginning to dry up petty fast, but there were a couple of spots that were tricky due to a small river running through the back side – you had to cross the river right before a critical brake point that would then set you up for the slalom.
Run 3 offered an almost completely dry course. We finished heat #1 with Bedard in first with a solid 54.510, followed by Ostrowski with a 54.808, and then Goldsmith with a 55.866.
Heat #3 started under sunny skies, warm temps, and nice hot dry pavement. Between heats most of the front runners swapped rains for the sticky rubber. The WRX Duo both laid down quick 53’s, but again Bedard collected cones – 5 this time – that was pretty cool. Josh Olson was quite impressive with a low 54 on street tires – he was in Mike Sheskey’s KMS Mugen ITR. Rob Broker finally appeared with a 54 and Goldsmith spun himself out of the top 5.
Heat #2 took way too long to run, so we heard that we were only getting 2 runs in Heat #3. The pressure was on. Here we were, down to the last run to decide the winner on a course that had been changing all day long. The WRX Duo laid the smack down with runs that were both close to FTD. Big “O” a 52.804 and Bedard a super fast 52.402. Olson backed up that previous mid 54 and Shesky ran a solid 55. Broker continued improvement with a 53 but was plus 1. Steve Nackers and Bill Chetney both proved their fastest runs with 59.168 and 60.749 respectively. Goldsmith ended up with FTD for the entire event and the class win with a smokin’ 52.006.

Very impressive driving, Clayton
I have to say, the Street Mod guys have really stepped the competition up a notch this year. It used to be I could keep up (sometimes even beat them) with street tires -- not the case this year
Hopefully I will be able to come up with a race tire budget sometime soon.....

He worked tech even though he wasn't sure he'd be able to drive, then he also worked a corner during the event.
