throwout bearing or input shaft bearing trouble?
Tranny is a '00 JDM ITR. Flywheel is CM. Clutch is ACT. I am using the stock throwout bearing that came with the ITR tranny and I didn't grease it (don't ask).
Squeaking noise when the clutch pedal is out. Noise is apparent in any gear and when the shifter is in neutral. The noise goes away immediatly as soon as apply some pressure to the clutch pedal.
I have read several threads in the archives and it is obvious that it is either my throwout bearing or a bearing inside the tranny. What I didn't find is a definitve way to identify which is the problem.
One guy suggested "put the clutch in really fast...if the noise goes away immediately, it is the throwout bearing...if it goes away in a second or two, then it is the main input shaft bearing". This seems to make sense as the input shaft on the tranny would need a second or two to slow to a stop.
Any ideas? Suggestions?

If there is tranny noise with the clutch engaged (pedal out) then chances are it's the input shaft bearing. If you have noise with the clutch disengaged (pedal in) then it's the throw out bearing. But the throw out bearing doesn't really make a squeaky noise, it's more grinding.

I edited my original post to try and clarify this. I am getting the squeaking noise when the pedal is out (clutch engaged).

I just had my clutch worked on. It would make a whining noise when the clutch was disengaged (pedal in). The shop told me it was the throw out bearing. So I would think that yours would be something else.
I have no noises when the clutch pedal is pushed in.
Sounds like it is the input shaft bearing. Anyone else have similar experience?

I had a similar noise that disappeared after I replaced the throwout bearing last week.

my R has been driving me crazy lately with a similar squeak upon clutch disengagement (pedal in) - I think it's my throwout bearing as well... I have a stock R clutch and throwout bearing with 81K miles on it.
I guess I'll just have to deal with it till it's time for a new clutch.

I had the same problem as you a while back and it spent the money to have the throwout bearing replaced and it wound up being the bearings inside the tranny.
Have a professional look at it, bring it to as many tranny shops as you can find and let them diagnose it.
then if you still have a warranty fix it for free or DIY.

Properly diagnose it first, else you'll be like several of us who took the same chance you did and were wrong.
It's easy enough to determine what's wrong. Clutch out (neutral or in gear) and it makes noise (like tumbling rocks) then it's input shaft bearings. Clutch in and it makes noise (continuously) then it's TO bearing.
I like you assumed it was my TO bearing and was wrong. Had to pull the box 3 months later to replace the input shaft bearings.

Well, mine started making that sound, and within a week, the whole clutch was jacked. I'd be driving down the road, and couldn't shift into any gear. Pretty embarrassing sitting at a green light during traffic hour!
edit-forgot to mention in my original post that they also found one of the springs had broken off.

thanks for the feedback guys - I guess I'll be buying a new clutch and t/o bearing soon...
funny thing is, other than the occassional creaking noise, the clutch seems fine???
I'll prolly just drive it till it breaks (the clutch that is...)

Exactly what i was going to say
Sounds like you have a bad input shaft bearing
