decent tap water is not a problem. if it is softened and not "hard" water or well water with a lot of iron. distilled water is quite corrosive by itself.

I thought it was a scaling problem not a corrosion problem...

Not to hijack the thread but where do you guys generally buy food items that you keep at the house? I have heard this crazy talk about grocery stores or some such foolishness. And all this time I have been stealing food from local farms. Zsolt, I am beginning to worry if you are going to make it to RA if you are getting stuck on where to buy water. Hehe.

i use tap water. in all my cars/trucks/racecars.

i have a well; not city water.

i generally change/flush the fluids in my street cars every 4 years. racecar more often (usually due to pulling the engine for some reason or other!).

2 out of the last 3 of my street cars have been over 200k miles. no rad probs. or overheating probs of any kind. or heater core probs. or hose probs (original hoses on the last 200k mile car -- Nissan Altima!).

no probs with the racecars, either (as long as i run the proper sized rad!!!).

i have never used distilled water.

your mileage may vary!!!!!

Theoretically distilled water will have a higher boiling point than tap water...

Distilled Water is cheap...why skimp? Lazy bones!

Unless you had amazingly crappy water, I can't see there being enough minerals dissolved in the amount you'd use in a radiator to make any difference. Scale is usually deposited by evaporation anyway, isn't it? And if you have water evaporating in your cooling system you got bigger problems than scale building up.

I was always taught to use distilled water in the old-fashioned car batteries because minerals could electrolycize (is that a word?) out and short it, but never anything special about rads.

Zsolt does not know what a grocery store looks like. He lives in Alpharetta. They require you sign a covenance when you move in that says you have to eat out every night at a restaurant. In fact, north of 285 grocery stores are pretty scarce. Whole Foods Markets are the term he might recognize.

He lives in Alpharetta? Then he needs to use Evian.

Seriously, there are plenty of places where the water has enough minerals in it that you dont want to use it. The water's pretty good in the dc burbs. In the city you get lead for free with your water.

i chemical engineers that do water treatment for a living. tap water as long you are not on a well with very high iron is fine.

distilled water is needed for the old style batteries but is quite corrosive for metal. the distilled water tries to reach equilibrium and if there is no dissolved solids, it will dissolve them until there is equilibrium. tap water already has some dissolved solids and this alkalinity provides a buffering effect.

the major reason to change anti-freeze is not because the glycol is gone but because the corrosion inhibitors in the anti-freeze is effective gone. service shops do not have distilled water available for refilling your system. they will use their tap water.

hope this helps.

You guys don't read very well.

He clearly stated that he needed water for his radiagtor. You guys are all talking about "radiators."

Radiagtor water, as everyone knows, comes from the hot springs at the base of Radiag Mountain just outside of Boulder, CO. The mountain, and the water that comes from it, is named for the "Radiag." A mythical creature that could fly at the speed of sound, but didn't have enough strength in its paws to provide the torque to open a pickle jar.
Some say the Radiag was the inspiration for the S2000, and that the car was originally named "Radiagtor 2000." But Honda will not fess up to this.

Radiagtor water is damned expensive because it only comes from one place. But that shouldn't be an issue for someone that has cases of Evian in his garage.

Scott, wondering if all you guys slept during Mythology class.

You'd like to think that, wouldn't you???!???
Radiag is entirely populated with criminals, as everyone knows, and you must have known that I knew this, you would have counted on it! So I can clearly not choose the water in front of you.
But, you also mentioned Colorado. Which means you must have studied conservation. And in studying, you must have learned that man is mortal and bottled water is frivolous, and put the Radiag as far from you as possible, so I can clearly not choose the water in front of me.

Never get involved in a landwar in Alpharetta. Or colorado.

Please. He clearly misspelled radigator. Which, as we ALL know, is a circular alligator. A rare find these days in the Amazon jungle. Its ability to strike in any direction is only surpassed by its fearsome intelligence. In fact, if SPiFF really does possess such a creature, I'm wondering which one is the pet.

My advice is to stop worrying about what water to feed it and start planning its demise before it performs its nightmarish flying saucer chop.

You guys suck. It seems Grocery Stores in Alpharetta don't have water for cars. When I asked the helpful looking hottie 16-year old check out chick if they had any "radiagtor water", she suggested I look in the wine and cheese section. Didn't see any though.

Maybe I should cross the county line to ghetto Gwinnett Co.

Bah .. I will just use Evian. When Judy asks me what happened to her bath water, I will just have to say I got real thirsty.

Or, maybe he's tricking us all and has finally managed to cross breed a rodent and a reptile.
Could the frogman actually have a RattyGator living in a pool of Evian in his basement?

Very funny. We all know Judy refuses to bathe in anything but milk from virgin goats. The viscosity works well with her golden fleeced loofa.
