Default GSR or Type-R Swap??

Hey Guys/Gals,

Maybe I got the wrong forum, sorry if this is the case.

I'm trying to decide to swap a GSR or a Type-R into a 1995 EJ.

I'm concerned with the furture maint. on the Type-R suppose to GSR.

Regarding hard to find parts etc.... (Long Term).

I know it cost more but that's not the point, just availability of parts.

But will the performance gain be worth it?

The idea of the car is mainly used for work, but sometimes Auto-X (in the furture).

Any input is greatly appreciated....

get a type-r. if you cant afford it you can always go the poor mans route and use type r internals in a gsr w/b16 head.

go b18c5. you'll be better off than getting the gsr and spending more than the r trying to make it as fast.

i don't know why your worried about parts availability. You should be able to get parts for either engine package from Acura, down the road, just a readily.

It can be a tough choice. Everyone would rather the ITR engine, myself included. I ended up choosing the gsr (jdm) because the extra 15 or so whp just wasn't worth paying 50% more for (it looked like a lot more in cdn $$).

The gsr setup is more of a daily driver/performance compromise, compared to the itr swap.

Many gsr engine owners put in an itr intake cam, along with their bolt-ons (which you'd do anyway), and chip the ecu (which you'd do with the itr swap anyway), and get better than stock itr hp. still don't have the gearing tho, or the lsd (unless you go jdm and order one). Good cheap upgrade, tho, that can gain back a good 10whp anyway.

Shoot, i've seen charts of stock jdm gsr engines (with bolt-ons), putting down stock itr hp. Then i've seen dynos of gsr's with all the goodies, intake mani, 4-1 header, tuning...putting down measly hp...but its tough to accurately compare one dyno to another

I would have to say it depends on what you want to do. If you plan on going NA then get the itr. If you plan on boostin in the future, get the GSR. Take a step back, think about what you really want and then go for it. Otherwise, you'll end up blowing a lot of cash like me.

WTF? A ITR from Honda USA brand spankin new (long block) is $5000. Used complete should be about $4500. GSR (long block) is typically $1700 - $2000. Used complete is about $3500. I'd go with the ITR, stick in a set of JUN stage 3 cams and you're good to go. If it's healthy, I'd say you may even hit 210+ whp.

ITR for sure..
It's a far more cost effective choice, and YES the gains will be totally worth it. In fact, the ITR tranny by itself is big gain all on its own over the GSR tranny.

You would probably spend more money on making a GSR into an ITR engine than you would just outright buying an ITR engine swap. Maintenance on a GSR & ITR engine is on the same level. You shouldn't have any trouble maintnencing an ITR engine at all.
