Alright. I'm new to these forums. I'd just really like some help, because I'm a poor high school student and I can't really afford to go to a dealer right now.

I drive a 1994 Civic LX.

About 2 years ago (maybe 1.5 years?) the speedometer stopped working. It will stay at zero most of the time and sometimes jump to 40, 80, even 110 mph, just floating over the entire panel. Of course because of this, my odometer is not working either, and I'd say it's about 50,000 miles off-- not good. I now can't resell my car. So, also, the trip odometer isn't working. It only picks up the erratic spasms of the speedometer.

Also, the "check engine" light blinks on every once in a while, but it's not on when I first start the engine... I'd like to attribute this to the malfunctioning of the panel, but I'm not sure. I've driven it now for a long time with no problems, and I go a good two weeks before needing to fill up, going about 30-40 miles per day.

Does anybody have any kind of solution? My parents tried replacing the entire front panel, but that didn't work out-- same problems. What can I do?

Your VSS is hosed. It's in the top of your transmission and you can get to it from the top of the car.

I can't believe you let it go for 50k though.

 

I really don't know anything about my car except that it goes. It is something if I jsut took it down to the local AutoZone or something, they'd patch up for me right quick?

 

No. They'll order it for you, but you have to put it in. It honestly takes 10 minutes.

 

How much would fixing a problem like that cost? (I'm getting very close already to my max posting of 5 per day, so I'll just edit my last post if it gets that far...)

You can most likely find a replacement on here much cheaper than that. And I've been looking for an axle replacement tutorial and a how to on filling the transmission fluid from the VSS (which in all purposes will show you how to remove/replace it).

I'll post them in here momentarily.

This is for a B series transmission (not exactly what you have) but for all purposes it's the same deal.

Well... at least I found out that it was as simple as replacing a single part...

Yeah. Won't take you long at all. If you need more help post back here. Just be careful to not overtorque the bolt that holds it in.
