Update: the valve cover painting project is completly done, for final pics go to page 2.
ok, well just spent the last few min masking my valve cover for my GSR, anyway, i am not completly done, but i was just wondering about this little ring of bare metal around the spark plug holes (the sides are taped, just not the bottom) that i didnt get taped off, am i going to have problems with it if it is not masked of, or is it not a big deal if it gets painted? if it needs to be masked off how did u do it? also, did anybody else notice how a quarter will fit in the 8 holes almost perfectly, im thinking about just usings some quarters to cover those instead of taping them off. as for all the others i have just been using masking tape and a hobby knife. any advise will be appresiated. thanks

im just guna use some gold engine paint to paint it. i didnt know about sanding because i still want it to have a little wrinkle to it. should i just use some fairly high grit sand paper just to scuff it up a bit???

you ahve to mask those holes or the paint will chip there and oil will come out. also I hope you degreased the valve cover so the paint will actually stick.
never said it was the same but paint will not stick to oil. leaving the wrinkle finish on there and painting it is fine as long as there is no oil.
no need to sand if you want the wrinkled finish.

yes its degreased, and im thinking about scuffin it up some.
and yea, the quarter sized holes will be masked, havnt got there yet, so does anybody think i should worry about masking the ring of bare metal around the spark plug holes or not?

how did u mask it, its hard enough wraping the tape around the side of the spark plug holes, but chances are i will just leave those taped how they are.
i used chapstick to do all my masking on my Valve cover... was way quicker than the tape and came out just as clean... I got no pics of it....I didn't sand it, just cleaned it real well with soap and water....
I'd mask of the lettering with the chapstik sooo much easier than tape...

do the sides first. wrap it around the hole. then do the top like how you did on the oil filler hole.

well, thanks for the help guys, i got to paint it today, didnt really have any problems, other than after my second coat i wished i wouldnt have chapsticked the writing, so i took all the chapstick off any continued painting. im very happy with the turn out. sorry the pics dont really show how nice it looks. looks amazing in the sunlight, so i will have to take more pics tommorow. anyway, here it is.
Looks good, but why did you paint the dohc vtec and honda and not the H?
IMO It looks good but the H sticks out too much, I wouldn't have painted the dohc vtec or honda

i used high temp engine paint, good for 500 degrees or something like that. its just duplicolor engine paint, costs 5 bux if that.

[QUOTE=jz]yeah, using vaseline and chapstick for such tedious(sp?) work like that isnt worth it. its too risky and easy to mess up. i just paint over it and sand it down later. heres a pic of when i did mine. just hit the raised lettering with some 120 grit or so and be sure to tape off the area around it so you dont mess your nice paint job up.

sorry you didn't have a good experience with the chapstik idea, you just can't slop it on but it worked great for me... Looks good regardless...

no im not going to sand the lettering off, thats why i had to stop and take the chapstick off cause i liked how the letters look gold. and even when i had the chapstick on them i was going to paint the letters black, so they r either going to stay gold of end up black, just going to have to wait and see if i really like them gold or not.
