Default GSR Tranny in a LS

i've been searching and found some, but minimal info on this topic.

`What effect would a GSR tranny in an LS have?
i.e. actual speed vs the speedomiter?, rpm range @ what speed (ls vs gsr)?, does it make it top out @ a certain speed becuase of rpm? any negative effects?
`what would the effect of adding a lsd be w/ only min. bolt-ons?

i'm doing an auto to manuel conversion on a 94ls, planning on going forced induction in a year

the more detail the better, dont worry about long posts, i'll eat up as much info as you can throw at me. thanks

a friend of mine put the GSR tranny on his LS...i drove it a couple of times and to me, it feels a lot better. it feels more powerful off the line then a LS trans, and it feels like the car accelerates faster and goes through the gears quicker. that's just how it feels to me, i honestly can't give you all the positives and negatives like other members can...so just try to find some people who've done it and talk to them. sorry, not a big help

That's a lie...because there is more info than you can think of about this kind of stuff out there.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Medek &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">`What effect would a GSR tranny in an LS have?

What do you think would happen? What do shorter gear ratios mean? QUICKER ACCELERATION! sheesh.... It's not going to tamper with your speedometer at all either. And obviously, back to the shorter ratio thing...cruising RPMs will be slightly higher than the LS tranny.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Medek &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">does it make it top out @ a certain speed becuase of rpm? any negative effects?</TD></TR></TABLE>

PUH-leeze! Top out? If you're topping your car out on public roads, well, I'd say what you deserve but it wouldn't be very kind to type in a public place like this. And you're not going to get your car up to 150mph on a track! If you do, you've got a serious racecar going on.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Medek &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">what would the effect of adding a lsd be w/ only min. bolt-ons?
</TD></TR></TABLE>

No matter what the mods, an LSD still performs the same function. There are different types of LSDs....clutch type, gear type, helical, the Phantom Grip....search.

I think you've been eating up too much wrong information. I hope I atleast gave you food for thought and will go search and come back with more precise questions.

I wasn't referring to just searching on here. There are other web boards and there are numerous websites that can be reached through a Google or Yahoo! search. Just wanted to calrify that.

And what do you mean by "differential" in your buddies truck? I'm guessing you mean the rear-end diff.?

Now, obviously not only are cars and trucks different, but, FF and FR are different also. I've helped a couple guys change rear-end gears in Jeeps and then throw 39x12.50 tires on...now that throws the speedo waaaaaay off!

I can't say that I've ever seen just a gear change throw a speedo off though...could be the difference in the sensor that is used to send the speed to the gauge cluster...who knows...

its ok your definatly on the right track.. gsr trans in a LS is wonderful.
especially when you throw the 5th gear and fd from the ys1 into the gsr.

it gives you much higher top speed and allows to actually drive in the freeway w/o rev'ing at 8k-rpm.. you catch my drift right? (trans from vtec obviously going to rev higher.. DUH!)

anyways good luck.

gee, thats funny. considering they have the same ratio on the first and second gears

but yes, 3-5 will be shorter and youll feel quicker accelleration

another quick question, im still learning about transmission gearing and i've read about GS-R owners putting in a 4.785 final drive kit to bring the gearing closer to the type-r. will this have the same negative effect of having a high rpm in 5th gear on the freeway/highway. as suggested would the FD (5th gear im assuming) from the LS be more suitable for my gs-r tranny conversion. or would any gearing kit be suitable for upgradeing my application.

and for the b16 tranny guy... why do you suggest that as opposed to the gs-r trans?

both are good.. I'd go with a gsr just cause its a gsr tranny.. I figure it'd be a little stronger since it's made for a b18 instead of a b16..

once i was boosted...i swapped out my LS trans for for a quaiffed GSR trans. love it till it was stolen...then had to sell the setup to my buddy.

now i've got another boosted LS w/kazz GSR trans. loving every single minute i'm in the car.

i would of gone with an itr tranny or b16, but i've got a 3" thermal and being close to 5k rpm on the highway is over kill for me.
