Default Got a ghost in my Vtec! Works when it wants!

I have put together my LS/VTEC( B18A block b16a head) Running a OBD0 chipped ECU Done the usaual mods plus( AEM Rail, 320 CC injectors and fuel pressure reg.) When I have started the car and it is getting warmed up the oil pressure is 60 PSI at idle, when pushed into VTEC no problems NICE power! Now after the engine is nice and warm I am at 20 PSI oil pressure and when I push it VTEC kicks in at 5200RPM then dies at 6000 RPM then I get to 7100RPM it comes in again to 8000 RPM and some times it doesn't even kick in! I am getting no codes but VTEC always works when it is warming up! ( I do not need to reset the ECU) I believe it has some thing to do with the oil pressure! When the engine has warmed up @ 3000rpm oil pressure is at 60PSI Go figure! One last thing, The oil pressure always drops at 5200RPM and stay about 40 to 50 PSI whil above 5200RPM!

It has been happening since day one and it has had 2 oil changes! first was 15w-50w then 10w-30 oil. I though it was an oil thickness related problem. The dip is good! I even put in an extra half bottle of oil to be sure that it is getting the oil and just put in the oil pressure gauge!

change your spool filters on the solenoid, they might be clogged. they're like $20 ea at the dealer.

You don't need to replace em, take off the solenoid and jsut blow the sucka clean with compressed air.

Sounds more like an electrical problem rather than a mechanical however...check all ur connections and grounds...

it sounds like it connects, then shorts, then connects again, then shorts... I had a short in my wiring harness that would do that crap and whenever i smashed the throttle it would hit the frame and short out the dizzy and the bish would miss like a mothafucka

What wiring harness did you use? If it was a non-Vtec wiring harness that was jimmyrigged to run Vtec, you probably do have a bad connection somewhere. The Vtec signal doesn't appreciate it when it can't run a solid signal from the Ecu to the solenoid. If Oil is out of the question, check the Vtec wires (solenoid and oil pressure sensor).

I had checked the solenoidand checked it but it was clean. I have a 1991 Acura integra and I am using the original wiring harness. I added extra pins to the original connector and they are solid! It always works on warm up which tells me that the connection is good! I can hit it 2 maybe three times before it starts to act up! my friend says it is the ECU so I talked to the guy I got the chip from and he assures me it works! I also have 2 other chips with 2 different propgrams and they do the same thing! There is one thing that is questionable on the car which I am going to fix on the car is that I have a dent on the oil pan, but I am getting oil pressure so go figure! I don't think that could be the problem! ?

Just installed a Autometer oil pressure guage because of this problem. Works beautifully!

The gauge works good!
In the morning I will take of the oil pan and take a look at the pick up!
If anyone can also suggest anything to look at while i am under there it would be great!

I remember i had a similar problem like that so what i did was rewire the vtec salenoid from the ecu and ground the salenoid straight to the battery and also cleaned the screen inside the salenoid and that was the end of my problem, good luck!!!

Pulled of the oil pan and the dent in the pan was smashed up into the pick-up. The pan and the pick up were mated therefore little oil was getting through. I have an extra pan and pickup and will be raplacing it tommorrow just have to get the pick up gasket from HONDA. Post the Pic tommorrow
I hope this does the trick!

Low and behold it was the dent in the oil pan! I put on another oil pan and oil pick up and then started the engine and got 70PSI @ idle and when the motor was warmed up at idle I got 30PSI and at 3000 RPM I got 85 PSI. The dent in the oil pan had jammed up against the pick which mated the pick up to the oil pan. Now the pick up can get all the oil it wants. There was about a straw worth of oill getting to the pick-up!
Amazing power and the engine revs much more freely.

Thank for all the suggestions!

Rember watch out for those raised manholes and speed bumps because it can rob you from your power!
