obd 1 - obd 2 SMOG QUESTION "HELP"!!!
Im running a 95 GSR motor in a 98 Hatch, everything is stock. Need to pass smog...
My question... if I bring my car in into a smog place would they do a ODB check?
Ive heard they plug in something, into my lower dash. Wonder what is that for?
Any suggestions or answers?

first of all a smog place should not pass your car with an uncertified (BAR) swap.
secondly a ref will not pass your swap because the motor is older than your car.
so that pretty much screws you over
swaps need to be the same year or newer than the car they are going into
oh and lastly the thing they plug into your lower dash (underneath the dash) is called the obdII datalink connector and is there so that you can pull codes and test solenoids and many other very usefull things but makes it a pain for us swap guys to do certain things.
good luck

now they do whats called a readiness test... which checks the ecu, and checks some systems...
if the ecu is not obd2 it will not pass this test
if the ecu is not obd2 it will not pass this test

Yeah that is a whole lot of work though. Better idea is find someone to swap in the 98 engine. Get it bared and just keep that sucker ahhaaha.

an even better idea is to find someone with the same year or newer gsr motor trade them for a little, pass smog and bar it...then trade back to get your newer motor back...

you should be able to pass the 95 as a 98 as long as you swap all the components over to the 98. Get the 98 gsr harness, injector clips, intake manifold, TB, ecu, catalytic converter and parts for the evap cannister.
Last june i passed my 97 gsr motor as a 94 by doing the opposite. swapped all the 97 for the 95, since i was already running an obd1 ecu. I passed with flying colors.
Just swap all the needed components and tell them it is a 98.

get a mailing address in another state that doesn't require smog and register your car there... smog problems are no more! florida, michigan for example...
Where can you get your engine bar'd ? I have never really heard of that. I know you are only supposed to swap in an engine of the same model year or higher. But I don't know how you are to go about getting the swap certified.
Thanks for any info

That will only work if the technician doesnt read the head for the year numbers. itll tell you what year the motor is just by looking at the head.

You go to the state ref.

Get temporary registration from the DMV. Should be good for at least a month. Not much, but it might give you enough time to get it ready. You can even get these a couple times a row if you have to. I had an old messed up MR2 that I couldn't pass and got temp papers for that POS.
I'm from irvine too. Go to the Costa Mesa DMV. That's what I did... until I sold the car.
