Default Performance Cam

I know most of you are going to say that it is not worth it, but I would like some input on a cam for the F22B1. I was talking about it with a buddy last night and want some more info on it. Has anyone put a cam in their car? Were you required to change springs and valves? What about fuel VAFC controllers?

well im waiting for crane cams to get off their R&D asses and relese the cam for our cars, you will need new springs, shims retainers, depending on the grind even fresh stock springs will be good enough, depending how high you would want to extend your rev range, as for vtec settings, yeah it will have to be played around with as the lobes on the cam will be different

noe I don't feel as bad about being interested in doing this if there is some one else considering it to. So is Crane developing a cam for our car? Also you have the VAFC controller don't you Misa? What kind of performance do you get out of it?

well supposedly crane told me that it would be out at the end of this year....im still waiting, as far as the vafc, gust the ability to x-over the vtec earlier so i can use all 16 valves with the higher cam gobs of power in the midrange i have it set at 3500 now as opposed to the stock place of 5250, and fuel tuning ability as well, it is a good investment and upgrade, but you might want to check your class rules regarding upgrades in the auto-x and RR arena if you will continue to compete, i looked and would be classed either in STS or in SM well let me know if you need more insight

i don't think I will ever put my car Accord into a road honda challenge or competitive autocross situation, although it would be awesome to have one ou there. I just want the performance range that a VAFC can offer. I might give Crane a call so they have antoher person interested in the cam. Thanks for the insight. Where did you purchase your VAFC from and how much trouble was it to install and set up?

i got it when it first came out on the group bout, for 290 shipped, installation is not much of apain (of course im saying that cause i know how to do it now, but i digress) this is one of the few ways of cranking the accord, next is to take care of the main restrictions on the motor tb, and header/o2 sensor housing, ive got the loot and will be scheduling time to delete the hounsing next week at CDE hopefully

are you planning on staying with the SOHC setup or looking to swap to the H22?

well here is the thing: f22 will generate more torque, if you extend the rev range of the f22 to the same as in a h22 and turbo both motors, you will spool much earlier, and have more torque PERIOD, maybe not as much hp, but the fact of sohc : out of vtec you are using 12 valves, DOHC : only 8 but you can play cat and mouse all day long between the two, but im just shooting for simplicity here

Huh what?!?!?! No matter what cam you are on, both engines use all 16 valves.

i was under the impression that the high cam made your intake valves push farther in increasing air to the engine

not all the time, out of vtec you are using two if your dohc, the way vtec works is this: on the low cam you are using one valve this creates intensive swirling of the a/f mix in the combustion chamber, on the 'hi-cam' you not only use both, but a higher profile lobe as well

Sorry Misa, that is the most absurd thing I've ever heard.

Here's how VTEC works:
Small cam lobes push on each valve individually, all 8 intake and all 8 exhaust valves.
When VTEC engages, oil pressure sends a little pin through the big cam lobe connecting it to the small cam lob, so now the small cam lobe follows the big cam's profile and they're still pushing all 8 intake and exhaust valves, depending on the stroke.
The engine is always using all valves, only duration and lift changes between lobes.

No problem dood. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty dern sure we're always using all the valves. At least I hope so.

yeah, your description sounded correct... on F22B1s, the VTEC only affects the intake valves, holding them open longer... check http://www.leecao.com/honda/vtec/index.html (describes and illustrates how VTEC works and how each VTEC system is different... )

OH duh me. Of course the lobes are always moving in sequence.
It's the rockers that get locked to the big lobe follower.

Yeah Morgan I was perfectly happy with my F22, but at 133k, first and second gear synchros were almost dead. Instead of replacing just the tranny I figured I'd throw a new motor in there as well 'cause a little extra power never hurt no one (except the bank account).

BTW I'm up to 135k now.
