Default kinda OT, cicadas at VIR?

Me and a buddy are leaving PA Friday night and driving down to VIR for a WERA motorcycle race. Anybody know if the cicadas have infested that area yet? We were planning on camping, but there is no way in hell I'm sleeping in a tent if those things are outside of it. The size of the bugs down south on a normal summer day is enough to skeeve me out, can't imagine 100000000000 of them. You can take the boy out of the north, but you can't take the north out of the boy.

You Yankee girls need to grow a pair. Ever since us Rebs quit shooting at you guys there really ain't that much to worry about in the South. We are damn good shots. (You ever notice we don't have the mob and as many gangs down here?) Hehe. Seriously, here near Atlanta, GA they are calling it Y2Cicada. I have not seen a damn one yet. Some overhyped crap if you ask me.

haha, I guess I am more accustomed to rats and roaches, you know living in the north? haha. Here is some good viewing material for anyone who has a bug phobia: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=869825 I guess they are pretty bad in the DC area.

In durham NC they haven't started (about 1 hour south of VIR). A co worker just told me that they have started in northern VA and it's working it's way south (backwards from how I would predict things).

We're in the middle of a nice drought here in the SE, so it might slow things a bit.

Cincinnati is gripped in Cicada frenzy right now, there are even suport groups for Cicada phobias. Most of my co-workers now have them at their homes but I haven't seen one yet although I haven't been specifically looking. My house and yard is only about 7 years old so I am hoping the earthmoving and landscaping will have stirred things up and will keep them down at my place.

On the otherhand, I am making sure that I keep the windshield washer bottle on all the cars full of fluid and will through a spare roll of paper towels in each car

Brood X was supposed to be a heavy infestation, and it has been in the past. However, as someone else mentioned, land development has reduced the brood.

The red areas are the areas of traditional heavy infestation of Brood X.

I have stores in Pr William Co and haven't seen a single bug, nor have I seen any around my home in Culpeper, VA.

It looks like VIR would be on the very edge of the outbreak; however, the land around there is less developed so more of the cicada have probably survived in the ground.

The green areas are areas of lighter infestation.

this whole brood x thing sounds so gross.
my dad used to have to travel back there for business.
he said the roads were covered with them, and that the car was slipping off the road!
thank gosh im here in california.
we only have to worry about the faultline cracking open and us plunging into the sea.
bugs are

That's not a Brood X bug.

Brood X is magicicada, much prettier. Bright red eyes on Brood X.

I was really looking forward to this, and I'm disappointed I haven't seen a single one!

I don't understand. Makes me want to move somewhere like the arctic circle, where it's too cold for bugs to live.

Anything with less legs than me, or more legs than a dog, I want nothing to do with.

Ha ha ha, that's fantastic George. I don't know what you all are so freaked out about, it's not like they bite or something. And from what I hear, they're tasty when covered with chocolate

God. We usually get it here. The only thing that really pisses me off about bad Cicada years is the noise. I suppose it will begin to **** me off in other ways when I'm driving to a Tour and the Civic gains 50 pounds of bug guts on the way.

Um, have you SEEN the cockroaches that we have in the South? I'm a transplanted Northerner also, thought I had a handle on the thumbnail-sized variety. I move to Atlanta, and the things are bigger than cats. And they fly.

hahaha. . .I've never actually seen a cockroach ever here in NJ, (within a mile of trenton). I actually live on a dead end street with a lake and marshlands at the end, so I am used to seeing mice and waterbugs, and snakes. We even have bald eagles here, go figure. Something about 100's of thousands of noisy red eyed hell bugs kinda makes me a little uneasy though.

i spent some time in brazil... and they have the BIGGEST roaches ever!

btw... thank god i'm not old enough to have been a motorcycle rider during a bad season of these guys... i'm sure that would be worse then the noise at night.... doing 70 on 95 south and a swarm hits you... i'll invite you to my funeral if it happens
