Tirerack.com recommends 215/40/18(86mm sidewall), so with the wider 225/35/18(79mm sidewall), it is not that much thinner. With a tire that thin, just be careful when driving around pothole-infested areas!

225/40/18 is more ideal... especially considering you live in san gabriel.. our roads are sh*tty... 35 is providing less cushion between the pothole and your rim..

225/40/18 is the correct plus size... it's roughly the same overall diameter as your stock tires.

Depends on what you want with your car. The 35 will look nice, but it's not practical. You will get bent rims and speed bumps.

what size tire are you comparing to? stock tire size on a 98 4-cyl is 195/65/15... 225/40/18 are a "plus 3" size... it may be wider, but it's not taller.

sorry.. it's almost 1.5" larger in diameter, not 2.0" i was calculating for 195/60 instead of 65 series tires..

65% of 195 is 126.75mm, 15" converted to mm is 381, total is 507.75mm
40% of 225 is 90 mm, 18" converted to mm is 457.2 mm, total is 547.20mm

there's an approx. 40mm difference in overall diameter..

check this site out

very helpful, looks to me they are damn near the same size on the outside. it also tells you how much your speedo will be off

I was judging everything off of revolutions/mile... where 195/65/15 was about 835 revs/mile, and 225/40/18 was about 829 revs/mile, based off the same brand of tire, but different sizes....

EDIT: looking at it your way... shouldn't it have been:

65% of 195 is 126.75mm (x2), 15" converted to mm is 381, total is 634.5mm
40% of 225 is 90 mm(x2), 18" converted to mm is 457.2 mm, total is 637.2mm

...correct me if I'm wrong, but hell, i've compared the 2 different sizes side by side when we put my friend's rims on his car, and I know there wasn't a 1.5 inch difference in size.
