Default Tires Chunking at Track. Will this happen to nice tires (A032Rs) as well?

I drive at a track in Arizona, and after two days of driving on some RE010's they were pretty badly chunked (pieces of rubber ripped out, etc).

So my concern is that if I go with a nice, expensive, set of A032R's ($143 each I think) will this happen to them as well? I don't want to "waste" money by destroying some nice tires if that is what is going to happen.

Also, how does this chunking occur? I would think that it is because the track isn't clean, and that chews up the tires?

Thanks!

Yup, chunks of rubber do fly off your tires at the track, usually little tiny pieces. Unless your tire is really worn down, then bigger chunks start to fly off. Expect this from any tire, but this is normal. You should get the A032R as the sidewall is stronger and the tires stick to the ground more.

My RE010s seriously chunked from driving at Seattle International Raceway due to the rough surface at turn two and the high entrance speed.

I had no such problems on subsequent visits on my A032Rs, probably due to the thicker outer treads and stiffer sidewalls. You can really hammer on them hard and they just take it all. Great street/track hybrid tire.

Tall tread blocks, heating them too quickly, and hard driving will result in chunking.

With a set of R compound tires... chunking will be reduced due to the larger tread area.

FYI.. have at least 2 deg neg camber on the front wheels before tracking R coumpounds to ensure good wear.

This is normal for a street tire. I've driven my R on the track using both tires. The RE010 tires chunked along the edges of the tread. The A032R didn't. As long as the chunks aren't huge, it's nothing to worry about.

Track tires like the A032R are nice if you're doing a fair number of track events, but not necessary for the novice.

worse than these?

After the expo! Yes any street tire can chunk, I have actually seen ao32's chuck badly too. Chunking, from what I've seen, can occur not only if the track is not clean, but if it is uneven or if you're loading the tires a lot. Basically, the tire over heats way beyond its normal threshold. Chunking isnt so much a factor of 'things chewing it up' as it is a function of over heating and High load.

at least that is the way I have always understood it. (BTW if you're gonna do track events on your streets go w/ the Falken Azenas I have done the same track on those tires and they survived w/o any damage, also felt like better grip than the REO10's. Trust me i was a huge fan of the reo10 (this chew'd set was my 2nd) Now I am a big believer of the Falken tire.

Later.

Chunking is exacerbated by taking sweeping turns at speed with many small steering corrections. A tire is less likely to chunk if you take one line through a turn, as opposed to making many small steering adjustments.

Great info. I never thought about it that way.. I always automatically blame it on the tire. heheh yea i know tire has alot to with it also, but now i realize that driver can contribute to it. Thanks man

Speaking of A032R's... are these tires good for autoX? I'm wondering if they would heat up enough during 4 short runs... what do the panel say?

i had run the 32s for a while and they work fine,
I think it takes a lap to get them heated,
as for chunking looks like it can also be too low a tire pressure and causes alot of tire rollover.
that pic also looks like your could be hitting a fender but correct me of Im wrong.
I run anywhere from 30-32 psi on the 32's
street tires like the Azenis which only lasted me a day
were in the 45-50 psi range Bad alignment and bent control arm...damn toe out!
I cant wait for my new set of AO48s to come in
and I will post a review soon
well maybe next year as I dont wanna use them yet(fresh 32s to use up first)

not sure-no personal exp. But the black RX7 that won the latest SCC mag sh00tout runs at our local autoX and he uses AO32Rs. He kicks 455 in that car

My Driver's front tire (A032R) chunked badly at VIR's North Course.. so I rotated it to the back and the same thing happened.. but only on the driver's front. I started with Full tread, and some have said the full tread squirms too much and overheats.. then chunks. My chunks were pulling out all the way across the tire.. not just on the outside edges. Yes, after a 1-2 lap warmup I was driving the tires very hard.. which probably didn't help, but I didn't expect it to chunk that badly. At the next event, I will try A032Rs that have been worn down (lower tread blocks) and see if they chunk again. (I'm hoping not).

hmmm i have never had any of my 32s chunk at all.
are you playing with tire pressures and a little white shoe polish
there are little arrows which indicate where your tires should be rolling down to.
i also heat cycle them before really beating them up
i have a fresh cycled set now but I cant see any chunking as they are covered in a ton of rubber snot from the track
they look almost slick

Yep.. played with the pressures.. Roll-over is perfect.. not chunking on the outside edges, but all the way across the face, and only whatever tire I put on Driver-Front.. Yes, I heat cycled them myself. Kinda weird, but hopefully it won't happen once I have less than full tread. As hard as I drive them, I probably should have gotten them shaved, but Discount Tire was $40 cheaper than Tire Rack for the set, but didn't offer shaving.

hmmm what about alignments?
im not sure what to tell you as I never chunked at all ever!
currently for track use
I run -3.3 front & -3 rear
and 1/32 toe out
not too good for street use
but for street I run
-.5 front
-1.5 rear and 1/64 toe in

Some folks use them for autocross, but they're really made for road courses, and they take a couple of track laps to heat up. If you autocross competitively, so that you care about every last hundredth of a second, you should be using a tire that's made specifically for autocross, that heats up quickly for autocross. I think the Hoosier A3S03 is an autocross tire. (You autocross gurus, correct me if I'm wrong here.)

I've driven on A032's and I don't see how they are that good. Of course better than the RE010's but not much better. RE540s are far better than the A032's. They fricken stick like glue! Even in the rain! I believe they cost the same price too.

RE540's come in 3 types of compounds...

Type-R - Soft
Type-S - Medium
Type-G - Hard

the 32s are fine
I havent driven the bridgestones yet
and my AO48s are on the way but I wont use those till next season
its tough to get the S tires here in the states
you gotta know someone abroad
however I would love to get on a set of the BS tires just for experiments sake
I started with the 32s as an upgrade from running tires like the PZero
and RE010 and wanted a bit more stick...plus they are decent for daily use and dont wear out as fast as an S tire
as for that chunking issue
Im not so sure wahts happening as i never had that happen even after the few sets I've been thru
my only complaint is the noise but one gets used to it

the noiser the tyres are, the more stickier they are!

Compare the noise level on the A032's and RE540's.. they 540's are alot louder! Talk about a RAW car. lol

Where can you get RE540? How does it compare, in terms of pirce, to the A032?

My 010's chunked like crazy too. I got the Pirelli P Zero and it is a good street tire that doesn't chunk at all at the track.
