I would replace the Transmission Control Module. Over the years, I seen quite a few of these TCM units go bad. In your case you say that you can start off in 2nd and shift manually into 3rd, and the tranny shifts fine. This was the same case with the 90 honda accord that I serviced last week, it was the TCM unit. Replaced the TCM unit, the problem was gone. I would look at your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor), problems you would see with a bad VSS is the speedo would be acting up. But if your speedo is working fine, its most likely your TCM unit.
Good Luck!

first, let me say thanks to all who replied...
now two more questions: where is the TCM unit???? and will a 91 or 93 TCM unit work the same???
