Help! My exaust is making 'puffing' noises!
Hi! i have a DOCH ZC installed in my 90civic h/b. THe Rad is kind of wasted, and i have another one in better condition. anyways to the topic. Yesterday was a pretty hot day, and i raced my friends jetta afterschool twice, and i smoked him. After the race i dropped my other friend at his house, rite after dropping him off, my exhaust (straight pipe) started making "Puffing" noises while pressing down on the accelrator. It makes this puffing noise until about 2.5 rpms and i can feel the cars power decreasd. after 2.5 rpms the noise quickly goes away and the noise and power comes back to normal, this is all while accelerating on the gas. i dont know wats wrong, maybe its my rad maybe its overheating, but the temp gauge doesnt display that its too hot yet. can u ppls tell me wats wrong please
My guess: Slightly bent valve. Does it make the sound at idle?
To test, put a piece of paper next to the tip so it flaps. It it gets sucked back in, you have an issue.

Sounds like it could be misfiring as well, but I'm not sure if that year would throw a code for misfire. If it's not that, I'm putting my money on a bent valve. Did anything weird happen while racing?

Yeah, like I said, check for valve (easiest, most likely, and least time consuming); and if not, check for CEL (use the thread at the top of this page). I doubt the fuel filter could be the problem, since it goes away at higher RPM; not saying that it's not possible, but I'd check the other stuff first.

what?
the o2 sensor has absolutley nothing to do with this.
the o2 sensor isnt a "cureall" that people think it is.

are you saying the o2 sensor isnt a vital sensor? thats all i was getting at. it could be the problem. 9 times outta 10 it is...somehow related

lol no its not a vital sensor. without it your car gets bad gas mileage and runs a little rich.
dosent affect anything else.
a vital sensor is the TPS, or the knock sensor, or the MAP sensor. without those your car will barley run/not run at all.
so the o2 sensor is not vital. and its not related 9 times out of 10. the o2 sensor is barley even recognized by the ecu till you are at cruise/light throttle.
