B&M short shifters
About a year ago, I bought a B&M short shifter for my 91 CRX. A few people have told me that they are no good because they will eventually wear out the syncros and your gears will start grinding. So far I have had no problems with mine, but I was going to buy one for my sisters 91 CRX. Any comments would be appreciated!
the main reason people say that is because the shift throw is shorter hense quicker and that means it's tougher on the synchros to match the speed of the trans to the wheels. just dont shift like a race car driving all the time and you'll be ok.
My car has had 1 for 3 years now, no problems.

I've had my B&M short shifter for 3 years as well with no problems at all.
It won't effect your synchros!
As for tranny fluid just use a good quality motor oil like
Valvoline Syntech or Mobile One. You want to spend the $$$ here because
you don't want tranny failure! They get very hot and so cheap, low grade
oils will break down faster.

Well it could affect your syncro's depending on how hard you are one your car.
Most people have short shifters for years on end in their cars with no problems.

very sorry to get off-topic... but are you really reccommending synthetic oils for trans fluid? I would think these would be too slick and would make the synchros less effective. Synchros need friction and whatnot. I've never tried it, but I imagine it would be bad news. I've been running Penzoil Syncromesh (penz makes it for GM, and it's cheaper without the GM logo), and it's been working great.
as far as the shifter... I've heard horror stories about ebay shifters breaking, but not many of short shifters ruining synchros. as long as you double clutch downshifts and you allow a little time during upshifts (unless you're being fast and furious), your synchros don't need to work hard at all.

i have a b&m short shifter. it's hard to say if it really did anything negative to my car. i've had it for like 2 years, and back when i first put it in...i was stupid, and liked racing around everywhere.
now that i'm more mature, i hardly get on the gas at all, but when i do...grinds occasionally.
it's too tough to say weather or not the shifter is the problem, or my stupid inexperience from 2 years ago is the problem.
...i love the shifter though.

i  my arcade like shifter, i've had mine about 2 years on a d and b series tranny and haven't had any problems. I do wish though I had gotten the double bent one from somewhere else though, since I'm tall it's a lil reach for the stick, but it works, so I ain't gonna redo it.
Syncro wear, I guess Honda's at least, is mainly due to the driver/owner of the car. Keep fluids fresh, and don't rip thru gears all day long and your tranny will thank you. I've driven like a madman for my first 3 years or so of driving and I never had my tranny act up, only one or two times syncros let me know they weren't ready. Anything mechanical will fail, beat on it w/a short stick and it'll increase wear.

got my b&m around 1999 and since then has no problems, its qucik and smooth not all rubbery like the stock one, just get the stabilizer bushings along with it or just get an ES stabilizer bushing.
Not to steal your thread, but how do you guys like the B&M? My friend at school had one in his Ranger and the shift pattern was insanely tight! Is that how it is with yours? I mean it must have cut the throw down like 75-80%
mine shifts easy, it does'nt take effort to put it into gear, and i can literally shift with just my hand and wrist motion not having to move my whole arm and elbow back, and its not tight, only tight in a good precise way, but what i can remember the stock one is fine, but b&m makes it quicker to get up to speed from a stop light in my opinon and more fun to drive quick

A short shifter does just that, shortens the throws between the gears. It does so by changing the lenght of the level, thus changing the amount the shifter moves the shift rod for each movement from inside the car. If you shifter at 5cm/s from inside the car before, it would move 5 cm/s on the shift rod.. Now if you shift at 2.5cm/s from inside the car it moves the shift rod 5cm/s. If you tear through the gears, yes, you are going to hurt them. If you don't drive like a maniac, then a short shifter isn't going to hurt your transmission.
Bottom line, short shifters don't kill transmissions, drivers do. </TD></TR></TABLE>
