Default Any way to tell if I have JDM gearing or US gearing?

TJ, Tom and a few other people have been trying to help me figure it out. TJ is leaning more towards me having US gearing. I'm not so sure. The day we ran my car wasn't running great.

Since I'm gamefully UN-employee'd I have more time on my hands then I need. TJ or anyone else with JDm gearing if you could lend a hand that'd be great.

If you could tell me in what gear what speed and what RPM your cruising @ that'd probably be the only thing that I can do to tell. I really don't want to tear apart the tranny.

.....I think I can figure it out.

1. What does your tranny casing say? Does it have lsd on it? VIN Plaque?

2. What gear were you and tj in when you did comparo's? What rpm's were you at for say 80mph? What was he at?

3. Did you see the links I posted up in Tom's thread? We can deduce if you give me 1 and 2 here...

I just went for a spin and here's the verdict. In 4th gear I'm @ 5500 rpms doing 80. And in 5th gear I'm @ 3900-4000 rpms doing 80.

I'll be extremelt pissed if this is not a 98 spec ITR tranny. I told the engine importers that I wanted a 98 ITR motor no later.

On your engine block underneath the valve cover to your left an above your headers there are three circles the first circle tells what yr is your motor... if ur jdm motor states 98+ you should have a jdm fd... if its below then ur don;t have the 98+ JDM Tranny... Also in 5th gear at 80mph you should be at 4500 rpm not 3900-4100...

Sucks when these stupid people don;t comply to your request... I know.. I demanded a 98+ JDM Complete swap waited 7 months and they ended up shipping me a 96 and claimed it to be a 98... Damn punks... Never buy ur swaps from jdm1.com they are just plain liars...

That I'm supremely confused because it does say 98 in the 1st circle. But like I said I was @3900-4000 rpms in 5th doing about 80 mph. When I had my JDM Apex'i RevSPeed meter hooked up and alos when I dyno'd it appear'd that the tach may be off.

ok, where does your rev limiter kick in?

Yeah, these things can be off...

It sounds like you have a jdm tranny with the usdm final drive...

I dunno if this is the case though.

We'll have to do some highway pulls to see - maybe one weekend or on the dyno day...

Hard to say where the rev limiter kicks in @ because I have a Kenji re-programmed ecu. I can tell that I can peg the EG gauge cluster tach no problem. I asked for him to reprogram it to limit @ 9300 tops. I sent him an e-mail find out exactly what he did.

You must remember that in the 98' JDM ITR the final drive is not the only difference. The 4th and 5th gears are higher than the 96' spec (US SPEC). Not sure what rpms you would be at, just trying to help. Here are my speeds at about 8,400rpms in each gear.

1st 40mph
2nd 61mph
3rd 91mph
4th 118mph

Hope this helps.

Check my other post.

My car in 4th gear at 80 mph is 6300 rpms
in 5th gear at 80 mph is 4400 rpms.

So it sounds as though I really do have USDM gearing. I am calling Nippon today to speak with them about this.

Don't forget that the actual JDM ITR tranny uses a GS-R 4th and 5th gear. I am using the JDM 4.785 FD, but i have a USDM ITR tranny and the 4th and 5th gears are shorter than the GS-R 4th and 5th. AT 120km/h (roughly 75mph) in 5th gear i am at 4400rpms. Without the JDM FD i was at 3900-4000rpms but don't forget i am using USDM ITR gear ratios. With JDM FD with GS-R 5th gear at 80mph (128km/h) you should roughly be at 4400-4500rpms. So i actually do believe you are using a 4.40 Final Drive with ITR gear ratios. Sorry man, i hope u get this problem rectified in your favour.

I called Nippon and they are swearing to me that it is a 98 ITR tranny. I can't really do anything about it now. I'm extremly pissed off right now. Its a small thing but a big thing to me.......know what I mean. I don't want to spend 450-500 bux on something I should have had in the 1st place.

You will *not* be able to tell by your RPMs in 4th or 5th gear.

Look at this:

USDM R trans - 5th gear at 80 MPH - 4400 RPM
JDM R trans - 5th gear at 80 MPH - 4400 RPM
USDM R trans *with* JDM 4.785 80 MPH - 4700 RPMs

The reaon for this is Honda put the GSR 4th and 5th in the 98 spec R trannies to bring the revs back down. You *won't* notice a difference in fourth and fifth gears!!

The only real way to tell is in gears 1-3. You have anyone local with a Type R? Ride in their car, It's *very* noticable the acceleration difference in gears 1-3.

That's the only way you'll know 100% for sure . . .
