Anybody know what purpose (if any) the plastic does on the inside of the rear speaker covers in the crx??

maybe some sound deadening because they are right above the rear wheel wells, thats my guess anyways and the covers have little holes in them

Good guess...didnt think about that. But that would also be deadening the sound of the speaker?

Can somebody shed light on this?

I just took mine off when I put in rear speakers, I thought it was maybe to hide the view of no speakers or something.

 

Take it off and toss it......
If you bought the CRX brand new, and you didn't get rear speaker option, they put that plastic over the grille (presumeably for noise or insulating the cabin ??) Some CRX'z even had a metal plate in there in place of the speaker.
I know this becuase I've installed stereos for almost 20 years now.....I can't tell you how many of those things I tossed in the garbage.
