Default NOISY diff...getting JDM 4.785, and some questions.

Okay, i've got the '98 USDM B18C5 with the ITR LSD tranny, and the tranny has always been noisy when there's no load on it. I've heard from a few people that the differential in the ITR trannies can go "out of spec" and that it only needs to be shimmed.

With this understood, my tranny will be coming apart this week and I'm doing the following:

Shimming the diff (duh.)
New mainshaft bearing
Input shaft seal
Axle seals (duh)
Replace any parts that are borderline worn

JDM 4.785 final drive. My question is this (I've done a search too, but no REAL help)

I have at my disposal a FREE 5th gear set from a GS-R tranny, so would it be wise to swap it out? I do NOT do a lot of track driving, so a drop from 4th to 5th in RPMs doesn't really dother me. I don't do a ton of highway driving either though, but when I take trips i'd like to cruise at the lower rpms if possible.

I'm sure that there will be the "drive slower" replies and "rev high, have fun" stuff, but I'm seriuosly looking for some REAL answers here.

HOW big of a difference in 5th gear cruising at, say 80 mph be with the JDM final drive with the Type R 5th vs. the GS-R 5th?

Remeber, it's free to me and I don't care about top speed - just safety for the motor. I know it's a stout motor and all, but if I can spare it from revving an unneccesary 500RPM more on a 400mi. roadtrip, i'll do it.

BTW: I could give two ***** about GAS mileage. I need some help here please.

Thanks in advance for any help.

BTW: where is the CHEAPEST place to buy the JDM final drive? i've got a shop account with Inline Four, but i haven't gotten a price yet - timezone differences.

T.J has the GS-R 5th, so what do you cruise at 80mph?

Others with JDM final and Type R 5th, how about you?

Lastly, how COMMON is this damned differential noise? Mine got a good bit worse this past week - just curious to see who else has had this problem.

.....there was a thread of similar nature just last week on here.

*goes to find it*

Ok, I found a couple:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id...=658411#658411

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id...=676165#676165

And it's funny you just posted this because Trey and I were talking this morning about this same subject. I guess a rehash is on order!

Here's an interesting link that shows some common jdm and usdm ratios:

http://tiiite.b16a.com/Bgears.htm *courtesy of Trey

Notice how the usdm tranny would need a jdm final, and gsr 4th and 5th to be the same? Now I'm thinking I might consider gsr 4th and 5th with the ats for the best overall... I really wish we had some jdm peeps to tell us what it was like with ats and true jdm tranny... Or someone here who has this combo...

Well Tom I can offer no real tech experience. But with my whole situation (Trying to figure out type of gearing I have) I'm begginning to suspect that I have JDM gearing. If I do I do a lot of highway driving and the RPMs are a little high but nothing to bad (My trek everyday to southside from Austell may have desensetized me, who knows).

I'm going to try and in a few weeks (Esp now that TJ has his car back) what kind of gearing I have. The tranny is a JDm one that I do know and the motor appears to be a 98 so...........whatever.

Hey I put the DC JDM header and I have to say I'm kinda impressed. I went into thinking its wasn't gonna make a difference but Rob's driven the car and my wife rode with and they say its a hell of a lot faster now.

After the dyno I'll tell if it was money well spent.

Look on your cylinder head just above the exhaust ports, Hurrell, and it should have the year stamped on it. I just think that you'd have a noticable difference between my car and yours when you drove mine if you had the 4.785 final drive.

Your talking the numbers that are in circles with a line in between them. If so the 1st 2 numbers say 98.

I had a guy in a USDM ITR say he spins @ 4100 rpms when doing about 80. I'm about to go and check what RPM's I'm spinning @ when doing 80. I'll be back in a couple of minutes.

It doesn't have the conversion and speed chart for a S80 tranny, yet.

It says 98 then. This is leading me to believe they sent me a 98 motor but a different year tranny which is possible but very underhanded and they will be getting a call from me today if that was the case.

ANy clues Trey?

****!!!

NOBODY has the JDM final drive. If anyone knows where I can find one, in STOCK, i'd REALLY appreciate it. I need this thing ASAP.

I'm stuck with the ATS 4.929 final drive, and I don't know if I will allow myself to spend that kind of money on it.

Anybody selling a JDM final drive or knows where I can find one, PLEASE let me know. I need to tear this thing apart NOW.

Thanks.

At hwy speeds [ie, in 5th gear] the rpms will be the same as the JDM tranny has the GS-R 5th gear...

Actually I have a second complete 4.785 sitting in my garage right now. Not mine but the guy it belongs to doesn't need it for a month or so . . .

Can someone please describe the noise the LSD makes? I have a noise I am trying do diagnose, but am not having much luck. THis is what I am hearing:

It is a very faint chatter, that is most prominent while cruising, and changes character as you go from a slight load on the engine, to a completely neutral state, and then to slight engine braking. It has a randomness that sounds like something loose and is rattling somewhere.

It is noticeable in all gears, and at any rpm, but is most prominent around 3-4K, and goes away when the clutch is pressed in, and comes back when the clutch is released. I can cruise at a low speed, without a load on the engine and press and release the clutch, maintaining a constant rpm, and the sound comes and goes. It doesn't do it if I sit parked in neutral and let the engine rev, regardless of whether the clutch is in or not.
Could I be hearing the LSD noise?

Thanks,

-Floyd

FOUND ONE! I found a new JDM final drive after calling at LEAST 7 different places. I had found a used one for $450.00 shipped, but then I found a NEW one for $420+shipping. I am slapping in the following parts, so tell me if i'm missing something here:

Diff bearings
Mainshaft needle bearing
Mainshaft bearing
Countershaft bearing
Input shaft seal
Axle seals (duh)
JDM final drive
GS-R 5th gearset

Anything you'd add if it were YOUR tranny and you wanted to get all of the wearables out of the way while the tranny's out?

As for your noises Floyd, all I can tell you is how MY car sounds. When cruising, my car would have a humming/whining noise especially if I were say, coasting downhill in 4th/5th gear. As soon as I pressed the gas, it would go away.

NOW it makes noises ANY time it's in gear, cruising, or not, and when I'm getting on it it is ROARING pretty good, so now is THE time to tear it apart.

LATE.

Well of course you need the stock jdm 1st gear, needle bearing (2 pieces), and distance collar...

If you want a genuine jdm tranny, replace the 4th and 5th gears with gsr and you'll have the exact same ratios. If you want to pull a little harder, then leave the usdm 4th and 5th...

$420+shipping sounds really good! Are you sure you wouldn't rather get a 4.929 though?

If i wasn't spending the extra money on bearings and such, then yes i'd get the 4.929. I simply CANNOT afford it so close to Christmas, especially since i'm paying to go to VIR for Speedtrials.

sure you can - just quit eating like me.

Then you'll have less weight to pull in your car, and better gearing for VIR!
