Need somebody with SCCA exp that can help me out.
I'm trying to get my car club members involved in SCCA, and having never done it before, have a huge task ahead of me.
What I'm asking for is a member on Honda Tech who has experience with group participation in SCCA that can sit down and basically hold my hand through getting into SCCA and racing. Preferably somebody who doesn't mind chatting on AIM, and somebody local to Georgia would be even better.
At this point I've contacted the regional execs and am trying to find out where and when events are so we can participate. But I really need an advisor with experience on here who can answer some dumb questions and help guide me through this process. Thanks.

Where are you in GA?
What aspects are you interested in?
Autocross?
Road Racing?
Drifting?
Rally?
I can help if you'd like, but I know nothing about drifting.

But if he's in Columbus (and being active Army he likely is) he has no local region. He's perfectly located between 3 (Atlanta, Middle GA, and Wiregrass). He would likely need some guidance over which region to hook his wagon, which would depend upon his interests.
Scott, who also no longer has a home region.

Ok now I'm starting to finally get somewhere.
It looks like we're actually in pretty good shoes as far as events go. We can capitalize on being able to drive to 3 different areas and compete.
Ok, now I've got 15 members right now interested in this.
Look over this list and tell me if I've got this straight.
1. Get licenses.
2. Determine car classes.
3. Register for events.
Now I can't seem to find a link for the licenses.. Or does Solo II not require licenses? Damn I hate being a newbie!! lol.. -sigh-
Thanks for bearing with me while I display my ignorance. Damn these club members better appreciate this.

Awesome.
Ok, now for Atlanta area events, I've found these races listed:
June 26 - Turner Field, Atlanta, GA To Be Announced - Gold lot
June 27 - Turner Field, Atlanta, GA Points 4 - Gold lot Run order BRGY
Now what does the run order and such mean? Are all the events open to amature/time only runs?
EDIT: I'm guessing our first step would be to get SCCA membership?

From your posts it looks like you are interested in Solo 2. The Atlanta region has a solo2 email list that you can sign up and getting daily list discussions on events, issues, etc. http://www.atl-scca.org but it looks like you found them. The Alabama region puts on Solo 2s in Birmingham and has one of the largest if not the largest venues in the southeast. Course lengths 3/4 to a mile. The Alabama region's website is http://www.alscca.org It has a Solo 2 section. The Atlanta region is also planning on doing a solo 2 at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway http://www.tgprace.com (TGPR) which is located in Munford, Alabama. The Alabama Region is doing its SpeedSouth Super Summer Shootout in June but it is a no novice event. LOOOONG course, burger, drinks, t-shirt etc. all come with the entry.

Hey, I'm Worker Co-Chief for Atlanta Region Solo2. Too bad you missed yesterday's event. 200+ drivers, good times, and we ran a novice school Saturday.
The best site for Atlanta region autox stuff is http://www.apexbenfits.biz, go to the Motorsports link. That has the most up-to-date schedule and lots of links for newbies, etc.
But to answer your questions: yes all regular events are open to novices and time-only runs. Our events are pre-registration only, at myautoevents.com. We have an entry cap for novices, so register early. We typically open registration about 2 weeks before an event.
The run order tells you when your class runs & works. All classes are assigned colors. BRGY would mean that all Blue classes run first & work second in the morning, Red works first, runs second. Green runs first, works second in the afternoon, and Yellow works first, runs second in the afternoon.
There is no need to join the SCCA beforehand. If you sign up for an SCCA membership at the event you get to run that event for free.
Again the apexbenefits site will answer a lot of your questions, or post to the email list.
Hope that helps...

Draimer,
I can make this really easy for you if you'll tell me where you're located and exactly what you're interested in (Solo II?).
Really. I can.
Its not as hard as you think it is right now. Especially if you start off in a smaller region as a novice.

Awesome information, thanks both of you...
Catch 22, we're located in Augusta, GA, with members of our club all over the place.

Then you have plenty of regions to choose from.
Once you join, you can participate with ANY region, but things like newsletters and award ceremonies will be with the region you join.
Atlanta region is one of the biggest in the SE and sponsors just about everything SCCA does. I live 3 hours from there now but it is still my "home" region. Its a good choice.
South Carolina is a good region as well.

You are sitting about an hour or so from the next SCR event on June 5th at the Fairgrounds in Columbia.
We had 110 cars this past weekend in Charleston, (i wasn't one of them though) and 180 at our event at Laurens last month. (though we dont typically see that many) Our events are usually 80-100 people.
You are really in a pretty good spot between us an Georgia with quite a few events within a couple hours driving time. I recommend you hit as much as you can afford. (if getting good is a goal)
To answer a couple other questions you dont "have" to be an SCCA member, but it is usually good for a discount of some type. (and a cool magazine subscription, newsletters, admission to bigger events, the ability to join in other aspects of fun..etc)
First time, bring an open mind, sunscreen, water, event entry fee and a car in good working order. Most regions can take care of helmets and anything else you need.
I look forward to seeing you at an event.
