it seems like EFs tend to have a clunking front suspension. maybe car has been lowered too long. makes a terrible clunk when i go over bumps. very audible at slow speeds. anyone solve this problem yet?
i bought the ES master kit to rid me of this problem. but i haven't installed it yet. well, i installed the steering rack bushings. it helped but only alittle.
could the noise be from the ball joints? or the ball joint boots? how can i tell?

thats like mine. the shocks are worn out, if you replace them, it will go away. if it knocks when you are going strait without bumps in the road it is the steering rack that is bad.
my damn car clunk's when goin over speed bumps and stuff, and since i have bad alignment my steeringwheel shakes along with that i get a real real annoying squeak... i have no clue where the squeak is comin from....
i also have a little knocking fron the front sus.
my uncle is a Tech at Honda....he said it is a worn knuckle bearing
i'm gonna fix that by getting either GSR sus. or JDM EF9 sus.

Check the bolts that attach the front LCA to the sub frame, these are notorious for working loose and causing clunking in the front end.
If that isn't the problem, jack up the front of the car and then grab a hold of different parts of the suspension (upper arm, tie rod, lower control arm, wheel ect.) and rock them front-to-back until you find the part that clunks or has play in it. HTH

that sounds good because i've checked everything except the hubs. and most people probably have checked everything except that too. and plus this is the suggestion from a honda tech, they probably seen this ALOT. i'll check it this weekend if i have time.
anyone know how i can tell if the hub bearings are bad? thanks for input everyone.

do you see marks, where the A-arm has hit the upper frame? i dont see any on mine. so i dont think that my problem.
but i hear that, that is a problem with the drop forks. did you know ST recall the drop forks for some reason? i called them asking about it and they said they have been discontinued for re-development. which means they fawked up somewhere with the design of it. then i asked the tech when they will be re-released. he said 'honestly probably never'. they probably aren't even working on correcting it.

Have the same noise, but my ride has 197K miles on it. I just assumed my shocks are probably shot and all the bushings in the front end need replacement. Guess when I get to it I'll find out.
More thanlikely it's the bushings or like Eric J suggested it could be the front LCA to the sub frame.

the shock bushings on the front LCA will also give you the problems you described , the master kit will be one of the best things you can do to your tired high mileage chassis.
it fixed 99% of my "clunking" noises and made the car feel almost brand new again.

not considering how much better the car is now.
a press is your best friend.

I have the same problem w/ the clunking in the front passenger side. I though it was the tranny hitting the subframe but, it was not(I cut the crossmember). My chassis has 320k on it but the suspension is from a 91 teg(not much newer). I might just put new suspension on the front instead of getting the master kit??? LMK what you think. Thanks

mine kind started clunking and feeling loose as well in my 88 Hatch. i ordered the Progress lowering springs, Tokico HP shocks/struts and then will be the ES kit. I plan on replacing the upper ball joints as well as the lower ball joints. My chassis has 280K+ miles on it....time for new parts.

http://www.suspension.com for the poly master kit , Honda only sells a few bushings seperately.
I dont use the poly trailing arm bushings though , due to bind issues on two axis. I sourced those from the dealer.

Ever since I replaced my rear cross member it rattles on the front driver side. even on mild bumps. I noticed it stops rattling when Im braking down hills. Ive jacked up my car many times not finding anything loose. Also it dosent rattle right away, its quiet after about 10 minutes of driving then starts to rattle. I figure it hasnt got any worse since it became a problem should be ok for now. anybody relate/suggestions?

holy crap this is an old thread. almost 3 years old!
well, i ended up chaning...
- the axles... no luck.
- to EX knuckles... tiny bit better.
- urethane rack and pinion bushing... a bit better.
- new rack and pinion... much better.
that doesnt mean that you have the same problem, but it could possible be. you could also just try to tighten up the adjusting bolt on your steering rack. its worth the effort to see if that will fix it.
see second pic.
