Default *stoopid tech Q of the day*

Ok, maybe it's not but I don't know the answer so here goes...

One of my CV boots just ripped open about a day ago, I noticed the nice "spatter-art" that was created by the grease all over the inside of my wheel. Is there a way to just re-grease the CV's and install new boots or would this occurance indicate that it's time to replace the axles with rebuilt units due to the mileage of the OEM axles? The car has around 140K now, and never any problems with either of the axles/CV's which are OEM.

Also, any recommendations on where to buy "rebuilt" axles?

Thanks for the help, this is my stoopid tech Q for the day.

just buy a cv boot kit from the local parts house...re-pack it and clamp the boot on and you're set. No need to buy new axles..

Is this a Type R?

I would recommend against getting a split boot (the kind that allow you to re-grease and re-boot the CVJ without removing the axle).

Pull the axle. Get an OEM boot and grease kit. Replace the grease & boot. Reinstall the half-shaft.

There is a right way and a wrong way. You don't always have to replace the axle or the CVJ, but you DO need to remove them to reinstall a proper boot. However, if there is damage from the lack of lube, you may as well replace the outer CVJ... they can be had that mount directly to the axle so you only have to replace the outer, not the inner.

If you have that many miles, I recommend just replacing the whole axle. With that many miles you probally have worn out joints as well, especially considering that the grease leaked out further acceleration the wear. Most people only get 100k out of their axles so be happy you got 140k.

As for axles you can get the autozone/kragen stuff for 60 an axle. Lifetime warranty, but from what I hear they breakdown alot, since the joints are rebuilt rather than new.

Personally I went with Raxles because they use all new joints and use Amsoil grease in them. Pulling out the axles and putting new ones in is a pain and time consuming. Even though I could have gotten the autozone ones and replaced them if they broke, I don' thave the time to do so if it happens frequently. Other people on the board have had to do it 2 or 3 times in a one year period.

However, Raxles cost 120 a pair, but you get what you pay for. With these axles I'm hoping to not have to worry about them again for another 100k+.

Hey thanks for all of the help!

EIN, one quick Q tho...you had qouted a price of $120 per pair for Raxles is that correct? If so that's not a bad deal considering the Shucks/Kragen/Checker re-mans are $69 each!

Thanks again for helping the "axle illiterate"

It's acutally 120 per axle plus shipping. I think I paid 250 total with shipping from Florida to Ca. They pay for shipping back to them for the core.

You can also try http://www.driveshaft.com. Pretty high quality axles too, but they make you pay for the shipping on the core which is not cool.
