Default car going in and out of v-tec

ok i have a serious ques. i was driving today and got on it and noticed at around 7k the car wasn't in v-tec. backed off the trottle and sat there puzzled. so i slowed to a stop and tried again this time it engaged at @ 6500 it is set at 6k on my v-tec controller. tried again and the car engaged at 8k!!!! shifted at 9 and it was kind of studdering in and out of v-tec. do you think it could be some loose wiring or a v-tec celeniod going bad? the *** on my VAFC turns red like it should at v-tec engagement but then the car will not engage or it will then swich lobes. its not throwin a code cuz im obd1. the car was fine last time i got on it last week sometime. so im just puzzled about whats goin on can anyone help???!

sorry for the length.
