i'm buying a crx that has a rebuilt (or so the seller says) jdm sohc underneath the hood, but he doesn't know if it's zc.
short of taking off the hood and looking around.. anyone know how to tell what sohc there is?

Yes, look at the code on the engine block, where the tranny meets the engine. If it says "ZC" then it's a ZC.

sohc zc with si tranny is a fun little setup... great for booting around town if you don't have anything to prove.

i would say d16y8 they are plentiful, low milage, the best power, and how many people are throwing away them for a b18c? Also that fact that the dissy (ef) bolt right on compared to having to switch to obd1 or drilling the dizzy on the z6.

d16a6 gets my vote- only because my 300,000+ mile d16a6 still pulls a low 15, gets nearly 40mpg, dynod at 118hp/104tq, and still has good compression across all cylinders.
