Kinda off the topic, but involves a ITR regardless...
Ask nicely and they'll probably let you keep the vanity plate.
NC let me keep my Scout's personalized plate when I "deregistered" it.

The one that has the stickers on it w/ the month/year of registration, give that back, keep the other one, in CA they dont ask any questions, and you dont need an explaination.

your obligation is to surrender them only so they can keep track of them and later recycle them to make new plates. nothing else...
if they ask you just say someone stole them off the car... then you can keep the pair....
but since you said its too cocky for your tastes so why bother with surrendering them???? confused...

If you say somebody stole it they ask you to go fill out a police report, Waste of time( That's what they asked me to do ). I just went back in about 10 mins later and said i lost it... I gave them the one with the stickers on it and kept the other one.

my past R vanity plates include but are not limited to:
HEYLAYDZ
CHKMEOUT
RTW DC2

I was never allowed to keep them after "deregistering" the car though, always had to get a temp plate and then order new ones.

that one's awesome.. haha..
I had "SHOWNGO" on my old R.. but that was left over from my pimpy Si I had before it. I have no doubt that it helped it get stolen.
Now I rock normal IL tags on it..
