Hot Lap (or similar) Timers - who uses em?
So, who uses hot-lap (or similar) timers?

well... yes and no.. when it works(most of the time) it is real nice to have lap time so you can see how your doing.
> Which do you use?
I use one from XT racing.. I did not know about hotlap or the others...
> Standard or Compact Display?
it is a real small box(it is meant for motorcycles), but it is real easy to read your lap times!
> Standard or Double range transmitter?
I have the one it comes with, seems to be really good range. I had a little problem with reflected signals.. but one i figured it out, it was great.
> Any lessons learned you would care to share with someone who is looking at buying one?
if you run with a group that uses transponders use that instead!
> Where did you get yours and approximate price?
i got mine from http://www.xtracing.com .. price.. i think $250 ish .. it was a while ago
> Anyone have a used one they are looking to unload?
I keep mine for events that don't use the AMB transponder system.. sorry
hope that info helps... just remember, the timing systems that use IR do have flaws, on average I would say it worked, but working out the bugs drove me crazy..

Can you elaborate? I just installed a XT timer today and will be using this weekend at Grattan.
If someone is interested in a Hotlap timer, my old one is for sale.

Nash...
Yes
Hot Lap
Had the standard display now have the compact - saves dash space
Standard transmitter - but have yet to need it as someone always has one on the wall
The compact has the battery in the receiver - the standard receiver won't work with the compact display and vise versa. The optional 10' cord allows easier mounting when moving the receiver from one side of the car to the other.
Direct from Longacre. Check the web for price. (packaged without transmitter)
Jim's got my old one...

We use the longacre Hot Lap Timer with a double range transmitter, works fine.
Caution:
If you do set a transmitter up at the wall on a tripod, etc. Put a note on the steering wheel of your tow vehicle to make sure you don't leave it at the track. We have lost two expensive tripods and two transmitters which we left setup at the track.
Both times, Summit Point (BSR) somehow did not find the high end Bogen tripod or the transmitter the next day. Go figure??

Nash, Go for one. They're worth it. If you are looking to come run with us, then just get the display/receiver as there are plenty of transmitters. Actually, the transmitters are the biggest drawback of the HotLap timer. Plenty of folks are using them but there is always a dolt in the crowd that feels the need to place theirs 7-12 seconds away from the standard location creating segment times and require the driver to fire a few extra mathematical synapses.

when I would be sitting in the pits when light colored car would go by it would start the timer. it was kinda funny.. also if there was a car on the inside of a particular turn (turn 3 at t-hill is across from were I set up the transmiter)..
also picking up other peoples timers.. gotta keep an eye out for that too..
if your using the XTracing timer make sure you set up the min and max laptimes as close to the times you will be running as possable.. you will get much more accurate time then!

So, which one? Hot Lap or XT timer? Transponders, where can you buy one to avoid renting them? Is it a standar system for most tracks?
If there is another driver using a transmitter, can you get that signal to trigger your timer (Hot Lap or XT Timer)?
jpl95si, how much for your Hot Lap? Standard or compact?

I bought the XT cause I can download the lap times from it to a laptop. More money to be able to do that over the Longacre plus I had to buy (and set up) a beacon as the default standard is Hotlap and a Hotlap beacon won't set off an XT (at least that's what I was told, will be trying it for the first time this weekend). So in short Hot lap is a little cheaper (due to the fact that everyone has one and you don't have to buy a beacon), but XT has more features. Remember the XT was originally made for motorcycles so you may have to make your own roll bar mount and you may need a custom, longer cable length (which they will do if you ask) as you can't unplug the display from the receiver like you can on the Hotlap.
AMB is the default transponder system at every track I've ever been to. Usually your SCCA region sells them. $230 or $250 (I can't remember OVR's price).
My used Standard Hotlap with receiver (no beacon) $100 (48 state shipping included) I might actually have 2 for sale

Someone asked about buying the AMB. True you can try thru you region. We went direct to AMB and the service is excellent. You will need to decide which model you want -internally battery powered or wired to car battery. Just like the Hot Lap (Longacre) placement is very important. AMB suggests that you mount the unit under the right front of the car. They say that you do not need to cut an opening in the splash shield-I did; it is about 1" square. Mounting brackets are on the user if there is no convenient way to bolt to the chassis.
Happy racing.
Happy racing.
Battery powered is good if you plan on sharing it with more than one car, otherwise go with the hard wired version. Mine is mounted on outrigger that comes off below the side frame. 4 Pop Rivets and 1 large zip tie (as a backup). Just can't have any metal between the bottom of the AMB and the road surface.

who's running at grattan this weekend?
I use an MYChronLight from AIM sports - the in-car portion is very compact, but has big numbers on teh display so is easy to read (it's made for motorcycle/kart racing so it's nice and small) it comes standard with a dual range transmitter, but you need an external battery for "high power" mode, any 12V battery will do. it also has the ability to work with multiple transmitters - either ignoring all the "extra" transmitters on the track or using them to give you split times. I tried a few before buying and i was most happy with the AIM. cost is about $200

I have a Hot Lap. I absolutely love being able to see how my last lap went while in the car, rather than waiting till I get back to the pits, checking an AMB printout from timing, and only getting one or two of my best laps. It's a great educational tool to help determine if certain lines, shift points, braking points, etc, help, while you are still running.
I do not own a transmitter, but have yet to show up at a track where someone didn't have one set up on the S/F line. I have run into the issue of everything running great on Saturday, then some new guy shows up on Sunday and sets his up 2 yards before the S/F line (closer to his pit, right?), and you end up having to do math at speed. Also, throughout the day, as the sun changes inclination, I have found I've needed to change the angle of the reciever in the car to prevent false triggers. Even with the false triggers, though, I have rarely had lap fragments that could not be added together to create accurate laptimes.

I have the standard size display hotlap timer. I do not have a transmitter but instead purchased the button that plugs right into the port on the display and mounted the button just in front of the steering wheel so I can time myself if there are no transmitters at the track.
Works well as long as I remember to hit the button. I pick a good reference point on a straight that is repeatable and this works pretty well.

SSC should be a good one, 8 or 9 cars.
Several Runoff competitors: John Fernandez, Tom Start, Me, Lee Niffenegger, Richard Boening, Pete Taylor
Plus a couple of misc guys I don't know and even a guy in a Mini Cooper.

Guys, I just turned off IM's because I don't get any notifications when they are there (so sorry if you felt ignored). Anyways it's turned off now. I responded to all the ones that were there but please use email in the future.
Thanks!
