Pioneer Head Unit Need Help...
I have a DEH-P6500. The problem I'm having is that sometimes I hear sound, sometimes I don't. It's applied to both CD and radio. I called Pioneer and was told that the power chip wasn't working correctly, and asked me to take it to a service center. I bought it thru ebay so it wouldn't be under warranty.
I'm wondering if anyone here had this problem and where you bought the power chip. I want to buy it and replace it myself.

If it's a short from some wires, I would think it would shut the hu off. However, it just plays like normal. I checked the wires anyway, they are OK.
Yeah, I was thinking about getting a new unit too. I can get a new P660 for around 180. Pioneer would charge 58 + parts for the fix and I'll have to wait too. I hate waiting!

Nope, it would play just like normal except there would be no sound. I've seen it a thousand times as an installer. It happens most often when a speaker blows. The speaker is starting to blow when you hear it crackle, and it ceases to function and creates a short when it is completely blown.
Also, in addition to a blown speaker you must check ALL of the speaker wire. The short could be anywhere in the wire between the deck and the speakers.
What does it sound like when you say there is no sound? Is it absolutely quite or does it sound like the radio with really weak signal-real scratchy? If its scratchy then its possible you have positive and a negative touching

Most electronics stuff, computers, and other high tech equipments would shut off if a short is sensed.
Anyway, thanks for your inputs. Been so freaking busy. Maybe I can find some time next week to take it out and check the speakers and wiring. I installed it myself almost two years ago, and the speaker wires still running around in the trunk!!! You are probably right. I recently noticed that sometimes the sound would come back when I drove over a bumper. It could be that it opened the short. But sometimes, it just came back for no reason. Like last night, when I parked the car, it was playing just fine, but in the morning, it's completely blank. And I also experienced the opposite way too, no sound when parked and came back in the morning!!!

before you do anything, unplug the HU and using an ohm meter, measure the resistance to each speaker to make sure its not the wiring. you should typically receive between 4-8 ohms resistance if the speaker is good. you will receive infinite resistance if blown, and no resistance if its cut or came loose.
Also, most digital multi meters have a setting that beeps when it is senses a ground or a short. If you have a DMM, use that feature on the + and - leads on all of the speaker wires and you will have your answer.

Thanks for offering help. That's what I have on mind, then the wires. BTW, if it's cut or loose, it would show OL (Open Loop) or infinite resistance. It'd only show zero resistance if there is a short.
FYI,
The beep function of some DVM's would beep if the resistance is anything less than 10 ohms. Thanks again.
