Q: Honda Special Service Tools?
Does Honda make their own OEM special service tools or do they have them made for them? My local dealership refuses to sell me any of these tools, even though I have the correct part numbers. Do I have a right to purchase these? I think so few people asked my local dealer for them that perhaps they think they cannot sell them. The parts guy told me no one ever asked before, but he said Honda forbids the sale of them to customers. I have previously purchased these tools when I needed them from many vehicle dealerships A thru Z, but this is the first time I was told sorry.
Anyway, I located some at Sir Tools, but I am unsure as to the specs or the quality. tsauto.com also sells the crank holder tool but nothing else. If Sir tools is not up to the exact spec, then they are useless as a Honda SST. So, does Sir tools make them for Honda, or do they just happen to make tools that copy Honda's?
I tried Baum tools Ltd in Calif., and also OTC and Kent-Moore but they don't make'em. Someone told me Snap-on makes them for Honda, but my Snappy dealer said they did not make any special tool just for Hondas, but rather generic universal type tools that may or may not be used.
Ironically, Honda preaches about the need for their SST, yet will not make them available to customers.
At any rate, I need to know two things: Who makes them for Honda and where can I buy the ones I need?
Sincerely,
diyer

do they have to sell them to you?: of course not....they dont have to do anything. they wont sell them to you because they want you to come in and pay for them to fix ****.
Oh, thank you. Well let's see. Everything needed will be for 94-97 Accords. I needed the Crank pulley holder; the cam sprocket holder; the cam shaft seal installer, the balancer shafts seal installer; and the crank shaft seal installer. However, because I was not able to get these tools in time I had to let an independent shop do the work. This particular guy is competent but I really dislike letting anyone work on my cars. If a mistake is made I prefer to make it myself, at least I will know what is wrong, and not have to guess "What the heck is going on?" Know what I mean?
At any rate, my first question about who is making the tools, is so that if or when I do locate these tools, I will know if it is a copycat or the real thing, so again I ask the question. I understand that if the manufacturer's name is not on the tool it is impossible to tell me, although it is usually on the box they come in. Second part of the question is similar to the first in that I just need contacts for the real thing, whether it be a Honda dealer or an aftermarket seller of the real thing.
Had you been around last week I would have given you an order. But I suppose it was not meant to be. Now, when I get the car back, I may need some tools for the future, if other problems arise. Will keep in touch.

Just a quick tip too, I used to order from Majestic Honda as well, however I found that if I take a print out of the prices from there to my dealer they are usually able to meet or beat it, plus you get the parts right away and although there is tax, you at least don't get charged shipping. Of course this only works on parts your dealer is willing to sell you, odd that your dealer wont sell you the parts, any other ones close by you can try?

Well, there are only two in the telephone book. I will try the other one, but I think they said the same thing. Obviously it forces the customer to go to Honda. But these dealers should realize that the type of person looking for these tools is highly unlikely to go to a dealer except for parts. So, they end up losing the parts sales as well.

Untrue, federal law requires automotive manufacturer's to make parts available for vehicles for 15 years after productions ceases.
Now, I am not saying that that law applies to tools. But it may, and might be a good way to intimidate the dealer into selling you the tools.
I mean, it's not like it's some propreitary scanning software tool or anything, it's a funny shaped wrench, jeez.

dude you dont really need tools for those jobs. save your money. for the camshaft seals u can use an old socket and hit it with a mallet or get some pvc pipe and hammer it in. for the crank pulley bolt just use an impact gun or try to keep the car in 5th gear and yank at it with a breaker bar. then just rent a pulley puller from autozone for free and pull the crank pulley out.
