is this supposed to happen when you turn the a/c on?

It's pretty much the same thing. It differs from car to car depending on wear and tear and all that jazz.

mine has some mist coming out of the vents, like a smokey white mist... doesnt stink or anything and it only does it for a lil while... is that supposed to happen seriously>?

my car won't idle for ish if the AC is on, it tries to die most of the time. I usually avoid AC all together which sucks in TX. If I have to use it, I wait until I'm on the highway. Maybe it's b/c I'm still rockin' a D15 w/ 180,xxx miles on it for now.

there should be a sensor or something that tells the ecu to idle higher w/ the ac on, yours could be bad.

haha, no, it has nothing to do with the alternator. the air conditioning compressor is driven by a belt, so the additional load is caused by the compressor clutch engauging the compressor on the belt drive. the a/c switch in the dash also sends a signal to the ECU called A/C Request, that lets the ECU know there is about to be a big load put on the engine idle in a moment, so it becomes increasingly pervasive about keeping the revs up. If this signal is bad, it could cause momentary poor idle, however it should be compensated for once the ECU sees the idle has fallen so much.
you might want to check for voltage at the ECU on the pin for "AC Request" (look it up) while the A/C button is on.
