Help me on what happened to my motor
Before I get started let me back up in time a little bit. Two weeks ago we put my new head, cams and all my goodies on. Well due to a bent skunk2 cam gear (it was bent and over 500 miles it caused the adjustment screws to come loose and the cam adjusted itself 10 degrees and bent all my exhaust valves). So I took it to a local machine shop where they put all new exhaust valves in and re did 2 of my exhaust valve seats on cylinder #3. After this I installed my head and 150 miles later im here telling you this:
Leaving work one morning the car just stops running as im driving ( I wasnt driving the car extremely hard but was in the 4500-6000 RPM range when it happened). I pulled over and tried to crank the motor. Car did not do anything at all , sounded like it was locked up or something. I pop the hood and check the cam gears out to find that they were off. I was still a bit confused cause I couldnt understand why the motor was locked up. Timing belt was on and did not seem like it had broken.
We towed the car to my frined house and tried spinning the crank by hand to see if we could move it. It did not budge at all either way. I started to think that maybe a valve fell into the piston and locked it up. But how??? Well were looking at my TODA header and noticed that the #3 cylinder runner had a purpulish tint to it compared to the golden color of the other ones. Must mean that cylinder 3 was running lean right? Well #3 cylinder exhaust valve seats were the only ones the machine shop messed with. Im thinking that the valve never seated in the first place and it was not closing all the way creating a lean condition. Since it was not seated right it was vibrating pretty bad and over 150 miles it eventually dropped into the cylinder. Also I think the reason the cam jumped timing is cause the motor locked up so fast it caused the gear to slip a few teeth. This is just what I think.
I have not pulled anything off the motor yet. All we know by looking at the car is that the crank will not move, the cam gears are off a few teeth (bout 5 or so), and that the #3 cylinder is running a little hotter than the rest . Id like everyone to tell me if what I posted makes any sense at all. I will be pulling the head tomorrow hoping to only find many bent valve but I prolly have some messed up pistons as well. Il have plenty of pics for u guys sunday night.
Thanks for reading this guys!!
