Default Troubleshooting: Ignitor, Coil, Distributor.

Ok. Here is the symptoms (after a few of you helpfully gave me info on getting me the firing order, which is correct).

From cold, the car is fine. After 10 minutes of driving, (car is at typical temp.) it starts to feel 'jumpy'. When comeing to a stop after driving, RPM's drop and attempts to almost die. Hit the gas, it jumps and goes fine until I stop again.

Will do this continuously. Battery reads out 14V when this is happening. (New battery also to add). Put on AC, battery goes to 13.1v, then when off back to 14V again (leads me to believe the alternator is charging the battery).

When the rpm's drop, it gives all symptoms of bad alternator, lights dim, no POWER at all (which is what happen 2 weeks prior to this happening). I replaced dist. cap and rotor and problem only worsened after feelin a lil better.

Any ideas? Found a nice article on changing Ignitor (not for my car though here:https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=636857).

I have the crapol'a D16Y7 Motor.

THANKS all!

from the pic, if the wires weren't in right the car wouldn't run for ****...

I have a similar issue. bigger problem with mine though is that it's intermittent. I've been told everything from plugs, rotor, dizzy, wires, grounds, timing, fuel pressure (all checked or replaced) coil and alternator.
issue comes and goes, after a month if fiddling with it I've given up and am just waiting for something to go completely, then fix it...

Yea, this kind of crap drives me nutz to. but i wont sleep on it until i fix it. so im basically gonna give it a shot. i mean, it seems like it could only be something within the distributor, or maybe a low amerpage output from my alternator.

i have a extended bullshit warranty on my car. worse case is i bring it in for checkout, pay 80 to have it ran through the computer at the dealership i got it from and just get an answre. I hate to waste money before trying, but i dont even know where to start. thats the problem, i was thinkin ignitor since its a known issue, but the car is only a 2000. no clue.

thanks.

did you try changing the ignitor or coil?

Cuz thats what im hoping to see helps. I mean, battery looks charged, but engine feels like crap. something has to be choking at the engine end.

I had the same problem on my wife's 00 civic. Put some fuel system cleaner in and all the problems went away.

Worth a try.

i am putting money on your ignitor, from past experience that is what my car was doing and it turned out to be the ignitor. when you got the cap and rotor out, check the dizzy for any signs of bad stuff. red dust is bad. if you see bad things, change the dizzy, the new ignitor should come with it. fixed hopefully. or you could try to find another known working dizzy and try it out for a while. let me know how it turns out

I am truly just fed up. I brought it to the dealership, considering I have a half way decent warranty on it. If its the dizzy its covered. However if its the coil, the ignitor, etc, i may get screwed cuz that is not covered.

But either way, i wanna have them do a diagnostic on it. its been running VERY WIERD to say the least. At least then I have a platform to build off of if they cant figure it out, or if i have to just pay for diagnostic and pay for it myself.

I hate dealing with electric issues, to much time wasted!

thanks anyway,

jason

p.s. ill post what they find, if anything at all.

It sounds more like an idle adjustment issue to me...have you tried adjusting the idle?

I mean you are saying that it runs fine excepts the at idle the RPM's drop way down...it doesn't sound like an electrical problem to me.

same thing i was thinking. when my igniter went out(this happened to me twice, and the second time happened 1 week ago, now im looking for a part) but anyway, when it went out, my car would run fine for like 3 miles, then completly die, it wouldn't startat all untill it sat overnight. WHat you are describing sounds like idle problems-and that coule be many things. (vaume hose off, idle set too low, bad gas, dirty injectors, or any of the trottle swithces going bad) look into idle problems, not distributor problems. As long as your car is still running, you are getting spark, not dist. problems.

still sounds like a fuel problem to me. its still running, so its getting enough spark, have you ever ran out of gas? It starts to spit and sputter and almost die at idel, the motor is starving for gas. I would still look into taking your injectors out and cleaning them, or sometimes just run a cleaner though your gas tank. I know i had a old honda that was still carbarated, and it did this all the time. I changed the fuel filter and ran a can of seafoam though it, and it fixed the problem.

Just got the car back from mah friend who is a manager over at the dealership here on staten island (manfredi auto motors).

They said nothing was wrong with the car. They ran it through the computer and found no error codes or nothing. They tightened the terminals on the battery (because they were supposedly "not on tight"). I know I took them on and off during my check out the last couple of weeks going with this problem. I know thats not the problem.

Yes, i did try fuel cleaner. and yes i have to be on like, my 5th tank of gas since this all started (from different gas stations.. mobile, sunoco, ammaco, getty) etc. tried it all!

hmmm... no clue whre to start now. One question is, this is my first honda. I am 2K over due for my spark plug wire change, (NGK's are gonna be here tomorrow afternoon finally). Do these cars run like a$$ if the wires are that close to change?

Thanks all!

yeah, that should help a lot. if not, look into getting new rear and front fuel filters. sometimes something gets cought in it, and fuel pressure gets rendered. good luck

yeah, take a look. Not sure where yours might be, or if you have one, but some cars have the large (main) fuel filter in back(behin the rear tire) the fuel filter up front is a smaller one. This is how it was on my older accord, not sure about your car, just take a look. can't hurt to check it out.
