Trying to put in a new timing belt and I'm stuck on this bolt. I've searched and read that people use impact guns and breaker bars. I went to Kragen and the dude there told me if I cant do it with a big breaker bar, then an impact gun cant do it. So I went home, got a bigger braker bar and broke my ratchet. Now the bolt is still on there, I have a broken ratchet, and a very small budget. Any Ideas?

 

IF its a craftsman ratchet just go hit up sears and get a new one...

mayber try a open ended wrech with a breaker bar..

do you have access to air?

Don't use a ratchet, it's just going to break them. Use a non ratcheting socket or a wrench like bagged said.

 

i use a breaker bar and the tool to hold the pulley in place.

 

i used a manual impact thing....where you hold it and beat it with a hammer... that broke it lose for me... good luck though.

 

I think it's hilarious that the Kragen countermonkey told you an impact wouldn't work if a breaker bar didn't. How many shops do you think still use breaker bars for things like this. Air tools rule in the shop I work at. If they can get a socket on it the guys in my shop use air. Crank pulley bolts are a pain. We run our air pressure at 160 psi and still occasionally have to break out the 3/4" impact. If you have a way to get it to a shop you might call and see what they would charge you to break it loose. Our shop charges about $15 to just break it loose for someone.

 

Thanx for all the ideas, I think i'm going to go get some air tools, I've been needing them anyways for a while.

 

I got a impact gun and compressor and I've been at it for like 20 min. Nothing... The gun is only runnning at like 100 psi but it says it can handle up to like 240lbs. So now I'm back where I was, but now I have air tools, any ideas?

 

most shops i know usually use a gun that can do more like 500-600 ft lbs to get those off with little hassle.

 

Make sure you turn the air pressure on the compressor all the way up. More air pressure =

 

I had the same problem with my g/f's 96 Accord V-6. I put a breaker bar on the pully bolt and put the end of the bar on the floor. Make sure you put it the right way. Tap the motor over and it will come right off. Usually by the second tap. I tried with the impact for 2 days. I called the honda dealer and they said to use the breaker bar and put it on the ground.
