Default autotensioner

Has anyone ever heard of two new autotensioners going bad? I've recently replaced my autotensioner twice, brand new ones from the factory because my timing belt kept slapping. The first thousand miles or so were fine, then the belt just starts slapping the timing cover. The motor is built, but the head was milled. Here's a question, when I got it from the dealership, did I have to add oil. It was in a sealed bag. Ideas?? I'm stumped, and am tired of having to drop 150 bucks every thousand miles to do my timing belt again.

Why don't you just do the manual tensioner (from a H23) swap and call it a day?

don't have the money nor time to swap over, thought about it but parts will cost me another 2 hundred, and I'm already way over my build budget. anyone got any good suggestions.

The tensioner comes from factory with the necessary oil already in it. It should of came compressed and held down with a metal bracket. Do you know about the new and "remanufactured" Tensioner/Timming belt kit Honda has now? My autotensioner failed and was replaced only to have it fail within a year again. I ordered the remanufactured one and ive had no problems since. I cant remmemeber the part number but i you do a search im sure it will come up.

No i don't. The dealership replaced the autotensioner for free. I asked them if the ones they sold me were the replacements for the bad 1st design. they said yes, but i have the distinct feeling they didn't know what i was talking about. How were these tensioners remanufactured, and where do i get them?

just an FYI, there is a TSB for the autotensioners on the 5th gen H22A4's... they are known to fail prematurely, though I can't quite say prematurely was ment to mean 1000 miles lol

These parts replace your existing parts and its that simple. Consider it an insurance.

Numbers represent hondaautomotiveparts.com prices at the end. the part #'s are there references and are not that of the dealership.

Jesus, I wish I'd seen KTeller's link earlier. The autotensioner and the two timing belts I had to buy would've cost more than that swap. If the autotensioner screws up on me again, I've got your website bookmarked. Thanks again. I'm running AEM cam gears so I mooncut my upper timing cover and valve cover, someone told me that if I do that, then I have to remove the seal from the lower timing cover so if anything bits of dirt, debris or water get inside from up top, it can escape through the bottom. Any one ever heard of this.

Random question, when I was changing the belt, I noticed an oil residue from around the head gasket area, is that my head gasket starting to give. I built my motor a little more than a 5000 miles ago. Is it the ARP studs, do they have to be retorqued? Any advice would give me some peace of mind. Thanks

I recently did the swap on my h22a4. The only parts I used were the pulley from the h23 the three bolts and the spring. Simply reuse the h22 balancer belt pulley use washers to shim it so it clears the other pulley that way you dont have to use the plate adjuster.
