Default Pioneer DEH-P860MP Head Unit -- Suggestions and Comparisons

More Info

I currently have a pioneer DEH-P920R. It’s a 3 year old model of the same head unit as pictured above. I love this thing except for the fact that it doesn’t have MP3 playback. The newer unit offers MP3 playback along with a long list of other features.

My system is pretty basic: Alpine components up front, Infinity 6.5" in the back, 1 Alpine 10" Sub, and a few amps for power. This is all in an Integra.

I just want to get some suggestions for other head units of the same caliber. Of course it should be capable of playing MP3’s and preferably have the same higher range pre amp outputs as this one (6.5 V).

Thanks

whats so special about alpine decks? Can you point out some benefits of Alpine HU's over Pioneer and other companies rather than just saying they are better? Not trying to bust your *****, just want to know whats better.

This thing has very fast MP3 directory access, looks great, sounds great, and appears to me worth the money. Alpine decks sound identical to my pioneer deck, but thats to my untrained ears.

i just replaced an alpine 7845 with a pioneer 7200,and the pioneer sounds better and has more features.i'd swear by alpine,always had the killer sound quality,love their monitors.but it seems every alpine i had, the cd player takes a dump and quits working.the new pioneers look like they have a killer display!

My only recommendation to you would be the DEH-P960MP if it fits in the budget. Either way 860 or 960

The only difference I noticed was soft key operation, whatever the **** that is, and the extending flip down face. I dont really like the look of the flip down, just doesnt appeal to me as much as the regular 860MP.

How is the face removed on the 960? Does only the bottom piece come off or what?

I'm somewhat partial to the looks of the brushed aluminum, plus it matches my dash. ( P-840 soon to be P-960)

I didn't realize there was such a small difference in the features between the 860 and the 960. A few years back that difference would be along the lines of a 13 band EQ compared to a 3 band parametric EQ.

On the P-960 the outer face slips down and off, then a black panel covers the inner display.

the 860 and 960 have a 6V preout !!!

I just got rid of my 940 for 510$
I loved that deck to death, the display was amazing, and now it's in color, I love my steering wheel remote too, it was the ****

I got rid of my 940 because I got rid of my sound system, so I didn't need the 6V preout anymore. so I deceided to go with the cheapest MP3 deck, but deceided to go with the 760

and picked up a 760 for 190$ on ebay !! and pocketed 300$

I never had 1 problem with my pioneer deck.
that's why I bought a other one

****, I may go with the 860 and paint my dash kit in gunmetal. The deck and kit would then match my climate control *****. $40 less at my cost and damn near the same features. I guess it will be the 860 for me as well.

I love the deck I have now, the only problem that I've run into is the fact that if you forget to "open" the face while on long trips, it over heats and you lose music for like 15 min while it cools down. If the face is down, it doesnt over heat, not during 8 hour trips at least...

i just bough the new pioneer 8600... its dope.. lots of features, the coolest thing about it is that with burned cd's or mp3 cd's you can scroll through the songs while you are still listening to a song, then hit enter to play the song you scroll to.., i think thats a phat feature

from my experience alpine h/us are always better than pioneer and kenwood in EVERY way possible, ill never go back to pioneer or kenwood after using alpine, and i tried some of the best pioneers and kenwoods, but i guess these new ones are different...

just my experience but as you guys have shown there is competition for them, i say a premeir that looks like the one of this page, ill give it a try

I was talking to Jim Truett from this board and he said that he like this unit and was going to get it. He also said he was getting a good price and said he could hook me up too. I sent him a down payment to show that I was going to **** him and he sent me a picture later that day of the two units that he bought. I then sent him the rest of the money and now I have a tracking number for the unit being shipped to my house. Awesome guy!

I have never liked the alpine units. In my experience the always seem to have problems, and I don't think they are designed well.

The pioneers are the most ridiculously reliable decks I have ever come accross.

I have a friend with a 2 year old alpine that wont play burned cds and another friend with a 6 yo pioneer that plays them just fine.

I have had alpine, aiwa, pioneer, and kenwood; and the pioneers have been the best with the kenwood in a fairly close second.

I just dont see whats so great about alpine decks, ive used them in friends car and wasnt that impressed. Sound quality didnt have a noticeable difference. Pioneer always looks a lot better...

I think people just buy into the hype that Alpine puts out. Just my opinion.

People buy Alpine and Pioneer HU's becuase of any manufacturer out there they make the best quality and longevity decks. I prefer Pioneer but would get an Alpine becuase they are good decks and prove themselves over time...I have a pioneer 4000 from like 1999 and gave it to my mom when I bought the 7500DVD, the 4000 works just as it did the day I bought it. My best friend is an Alpine junkie and hes had the same deck(the top Alpine from like 2000) and it works, sounds, performs great. When you have a deck that has been transfered from vehicle to vehicle to vehicle and still works flawlessly, thats a great made deck
Pioneer->
Alpine-> 1/2
Anything else->>

It is basically the color version of the pioneer deh 9400 mp model which I previously had, the only thing I can say I didnt like about the radio was its mp3 feature.

A lot of radios dont show you folder names, or track listings of mp3 and I have yet to hear of a radio that does. There are some neat *** programs on the net for people who have these radios that can make you tite *** playlists and shortcut folders and everthing for an mp3 cd.

Basically you can make a cd with up to 580 songs on it, thats the most I got to fit on an 800 mb cd. But there is no way to see a track listing with these stereo's. (I am not sure about the HD model but this doesnt have an hd). So you basically have to go through each song 1 by one to get to the one you might want to listen to. Which this is where the cd software I had mentioned comes in handy.

I dont remember its name or where to purchase it, I bookmarked it on an old pc of mine I no longer own "DOH"

Other than that I never used the radio with subwoofers or aftermarket speakers but it had inputs for all of those types of speakers for you to use aftermarket stereo cabling I suppose direct plug and play. I am no stereo buff, it was either that or that stupid aluminum non removable one mounted in that civic posted above which says thief magnet all over it.

I loved that radio and it amazes me that this radio is actually cheaper than the 9400 mp that I used to own. It looked awesome at night with its purple buttons, and I kinda liked the blue display better than the color display so hopefully there is some way to turn that off.

I have yet to see a shop where I can demo the radio so who knows. But I plan on purchasing that, I dont like the design of anything else on the market unless I hear something has better mp3 functionality and can kick the sound quality of these radio's *** then I will stay pioneer till I die.
