Well, I finally got the time to and cash to buy new parts for my H22A4... so the engine was yanked out.

However, I noticed when I took my EGR off, this time around it had some sort of sludge in it. whenever I removed it about a year and a half ago it was just a carbon type buildup.
I'm not sure if it is in-fact oil mixed in with other crap, but it would make sense since I was burning oil.....
I had replaced the PVC line that runs from the valve cover to the intake with a breather filter. That sucker ended up having the cap fall off when we took the engine out, and the inside of the cap had a nice little later of oil that made the epoxy come loose. Not to mention some of the oil had run down the side of the block.
But what really caught my eye was the intake ports. Of course the exhaust ports had a decent amount of carbon, but I wasn't expecting to see this on the intake ports. Look at the sides of the openings and you'll see what looks like dark shadows.

The stuff there was the same as that found in the EGR... like alot of oil mixed in with the carbon deposits. It was almost like the dirt you'd find in a nook in a block that someone spilled some oil and alot of dirt and grim got caught up in.
Now I'm at the step of having the long block at the machine shop for their work, and I'm now going to clean up the EGR (maybe I'll just block it off...) and intake manifold. Can anyone give me a good suggestion on what I should use to clear out any crap that may be hiding in the intake? Alot of carb cleaner, or maybe some acetone or even kerosene?

that's what I was thinking, just wans't sure if it would be easier to just dip it in something rather than sit there spraying lol. Oh well, time to get some cleaner!

It's completely normal if you have the EGR enabled. Though running a fuel system cleaner though your system (a bottle of techron, regane or the like) will help clean that out. It really just shows you the reversion happening inside your intake ports. Just hopefully you don't see too much in the manifold itself. Seems like yours is mostly in the intake head port which is a good thing.
It does help if you have a catch can, but most of that junk is EGR gasses/puke
