I'm interested in someone doing a DIY short shifter segment. I met some people when I was at the shore last summer who all did theirs themselves. It included cutting the ball and moving it up, and taking the top part of the shifter off and rethreading. The feel with bushings was incredible. They used an integra shifter in a civic btw. Anyone do this already?

 

all that work and you could just buy an apc shifter for 30 bucks from pepboys and does the trick. dont knowck apc by the way, as long as your not an a-hole with driving, the shifts are pretty crisp with the shifter bushings.

 

I heard it wasn't that much work, in terms of the amount of time required. I think the end result is obviously a regular short shifter with shorter throws, but one that can have a lot shorter height from the ball up.

 

you don't want the shorter height from the ball up, because you don't get leverage for quicker shifting. My freind bought his car with one like your talkin about and it sucks, it makes it harder to shift not easier. Everytime you step on the gas you can see the shifter moving. I thought he needed motor mounts it was so bad. Plus, these companies did some kind of R&D to get a nice feel. I like my B&M for $45 from http://www.optauto.com and with the bushings, it's nice and crisp..............

 

buy the B&M short throw shifter. i picked mine up for 50 bucks. best 50 bucks ive invested yet!!

my shifter was as loose as a ***** on a street corner in LA, now its as tight as an 18yr old virgin!.

so definatly go with the B&M and get a bushings kit to go along with it!.

 

take ur factory shifter cut it in half and glue ur shift **** on with super glue

and then magically look at your new SHORT shifter

I prefer the stock ITR shifter...with the above.

I recently installed the Integra styled Solo Performance Racing short shifter in my 99 Civic hatch.

Solo includes sealed ball bearings in the end that I've never seen with any other aftermarket short shifter. Makes for a very smooth feel.

 

i herd the b&m thats all in the magazines is really good anyone eles know?

I'd still rather have the B&M shifter. Only because I like the feel, and it's made by a reputable Company

 

I had the B&M with bushings, it was nice.... the thread wasn't supposed to turn into a buy this or that one, it was asking if anyone has made one custom themselves.

 

forget about the apc peices of crap, i had mine for a month before it broke.

the thing just snapped right below the threads one day.

i trust custom shifters as much as i trust apc ones...

 

I have the B&M... I don't like it... it sits too far forward...

the shifts are nice but in general it sucks...

Also if you read what the guy said they ARE doing it right... they're moving the pivot ball up... That makes the length of the lower section longer...

I don't see how you'd do it with a stock one without MAKING a whole new longer bottom section and just welding it to the bottom of the stock tophalf/pivot ball... it's not like you could slide the ball up and reweld it...

As far as cheap shifters go... I say if it's made of metal and not fatigued by the welding process out of the factory... get it... if you shift hard enough to break a shifter you're better off breaking that than your shiftfork inside your tranny.

 

well, I don't know which B&M model you used, but I used the $45 one again on my new car (Turbo GSR in a CX) with the shifter bushings. It doesn't seem to be forward in my car, but maybe i'm just used to it. All I was saying is that to cut the stock shifter, move **** around, and weld it back together, It would be a better idea to get one.

I'll take two! virgins that is.

 

I've got a B&M as well, and am very happy with it. As soon as you pull out of one gear, you can feel it ready to click into the next. Also got the ES bushing kit at the same time. Very precise shifts.

It would take you 15 minutes with a hacksaw and a tig welder to make your own short shifter. Buy some 3/4" rod from home depot for like $8 for 3 feet and you're set for like 20 shifters.

 

I have the dc sports one on my hatch. I also have the energy suspension polyurethane bushings. i love the feel of it. nice crisp shifts. I have installed b&m on my friends cars and i don't like the way that they feel. plus they have an added rattle. I paid 100 for mine, but i wouldn't have it any other way. I have had it for about 4 years with no problems and would hate to get rid of it.

Do you understand that it won't be as strong as anyother aforementioned shifters......
