Default Question about Hondabond and oil pans...

I just changed my oil pan and it has a slight drip/leak. At the time I didn't have any Hondabond or anything so I didn't use any. I'm going to drop my pan again tomorrow to fix it, and I know Helms says to put Hondabond on the corners but would it be ok if i put a thin layer of it all around and on both sides? Would this help with sealing?

and is there more than one type of Hondabond? I have the kinda in a black, white, and red tube.

you're only supposed to use a gasket for the oil pan. if you change the oil pump, than use hondabond between the pump and block.

My helms says to use it at the joint where the oil pump and block meet, and at the same spot on the passenger side. I just thought that using it all around might give me a better shot at having no leaks.

I find it best not to deviate from the ali-knowing Helms.

you probably over torqued the oil pan
which will cause the gasket to pinch, and then leak

nope, torqued it to about 6.5 ft. lbs. If i went any more, it started squishing the gasket out.

Using some sealant all the way around the gasket will not hury anything. I have done it before on a car to stop a leak, and had no probs afterwards.

The helms manual does state to use it on the four corners. As long as you clean the pan and block surface with some carb cleaner, apply the sealant where recommended it shouldn't leak, If you decide to put the hondabond all the way around make sure it is dry before sticking the pan on because when you start to tighten, the wet hondabond will make the gasket slip around and make your problem worse.

Is this the right torque sequence?

15-9--5-1-3-7-11
16..................12
17..................13
18-10-6-2-4-8-14

Actual Hondabond is bought at Honda dealerships for a ridiculous price.

Despite what others will say, RTV Ultra Grey Sealant from the local Autozone is the exact same junk, and less than half the price.

i'm curious also. I am replacing my pan tonight. I was told to only torque to 8.7 or it would leak! In a different thread.

The sequence is just a little different, it's:

13-9-5-1-3--7-11
17--------------15
16--------------18
12-8-4-2-6-10-14
