Default Failed E-Test, what's next.

Did a search, and it showed one possibility, wondering if there are more...

'91 Acura Integra with 160K miles on it failed on NOx. Max allowed was 820 and it tested at 1005 while underload (it was fine at idle).

I ran it on regular fuel, should I of used Premium?

Should I run the test on a warm or cold motor to help with the NOx reading?

The search showed that the converter can cause this issue, are there other things?

With thanks,
Newbie from Ottawa Canada,
Tony

change your oil, pcv valve....those helped me; if you still have problems have a mechanic take a look at it and maybe he can tune it so youll pass emissions

NOx usually means your timing is too far advanced...I.E. its running too hot.

Either drop the timing a bit, or simply run it on premium fuel for the test. Just make sure its nice and warm before the test....not that this will help with your NOx, but a warm cat and O2 are allways good.

Ok, one dumb *** question here. How does one do the timing on the Intergra?

I'm going to run the tank of reg. fuel out of it and try a retest with Premium in it, but it still means that there is a problem under the hood.

I didn't clean the K&N filter before I went either. Duh. Will do that this weekend too before retesting.

change your catalyic converter...also when i was getting mine test for the 3rd time after it failed twice...the guy who did my smog test shifted my car to 4th gear...(don't know if this is only for california) but at 3rd gear and higher RPM's my car had high NOx but when he shifted to 3rd the NOx level dropped dramatically, allowing me to pass.....to check the NOx level they have to be at a certain RPM at 15, 25, and 35 miles i believe, and when he shifted to 4th gear...it stayed at the required RPM....maybe u can ask them to shift to 4th when testing you....but again i dont know if this is only for CA because we have very strict smog laws...good luck

Run premium instead will be simpler.

To adjust the timing you unscrew the distributor and rotate it slightly. You should do this with a timing light tho.
