Default Sorry, I meant what is wrong with Honda's retainer plate

I read the info on the TB pump job at this website:

http://www.cybertrails.com/~pu....html

Below is a copy of what was stated:

This is a close up of the retainer plate (avail from Sure Seal 1-800-645-7584). These plates are cheap and easy to install, and will keep the seal from popping out, which I have seen, happen before, costing the customer a new engine. If that seal pops out all the engine oil can be lost in 30 seconds. I will not do a timing belt job on this engine without installing a new OEM Honda seal and the retainer plate. You can also get a retainer plate from Honda but I do not like them as well.

So, what is wrong with this Honda oil seal?

The front balancer shaft seals were improperly installed. There was a product update on them but it is long expired.

CHIOVNIDCA,

My apology, I meant the Honda retainer plate. I wasn't watching what I was typing.

This is a close up of the retainer plate [picture omitted] (avail from Sure Seal 1-800-645-7584) ... You can also get a retainer plate from Honda but I do not like them as well.

There was a TSB (Technical service bulliten) that Honda published about ten years ago. I believe they said the seal will fail because the installation depth was incorrect. There is a Honda special service tool (07XAF-PT00100 & 07XAF-PT002A) to install the seal to the correct depth. I would recommend you apply Loc-tite to the out side of the seal when you install it-use the retainer plate too. There is a retainer plate kit from Honda #06923-P0A-306.

1. Are there any special service tools needed for the crank seal or cam seal depths?

2. Are there any special service tools needed to remove the crank sprocket or cam sprocket - to help stay on TDC and not allow the crank or cam shafts to turn while removing the sprockets?

Thank you,
diyer

visit http://www.sirtools.com and request a catalog. They make some nice SST's for Honda/Acura. Cam and balance shaft oil seal install tool kit #HO 110. Crank shaft seal installer.#HO 115. Crank pulley holder #HO 70. If you are thinking about buying these tools just for your own car, I'd think twice about it cuz they are expensive just to use once. Before I purchased these SST's, I used a piece of PCV pipe the same size as the seal and would just tap-tap the seals in, but that doesn't set the seals to the correct depth-ya kinda hafta guess. I can post the complete job instructions here including part numbers and SST numbers to replace the t-belt,balance shaft belt, cam seal, crank seal, balance shaft seal and water pump. Whaddyall think?

It might also be helpful to include the rear balancer shaft gear case O-ring. Haynes procedure leaves too many details out. I'm wondering if there is a second O-ring or a seal inside there. Honda is telling me there is a 2nd O-ring, but I can't figure out where, at least going by Haynes.
