Type R Dilemma
I have a question for those of you who garage their R, like me. What kind of insurance plans do you have? I'm paying full coverage + primary driver. Basically it's like I’m paying for a car that I drive daily but in reality only drive 4-8 times a month.
Hopefully I can give my dad the title to the R via a gift title so I can get insured as a secondary driver. I may raise my deductible up to a $1000, comments? Perhaps I can get the R insurance down under $200s.
I'm 20. I go to school part-time and work part-time. I make about $200 a week
The insurance on the R and the daily driver is about $350 a month. My parents pay for my school/rent so I'm really not in bad shape. I don’t want to mod the R b/c I feel if it’s stolen I’ll have worked all those hours for nothing. I have a set of BRAND NEW RE010’s that I have yet to be put on for this reason. I also just bought all 3 Helms manuals for the 97 ITR which I’m afraid was a bad investment if I sell the car so quickly.
I just wish I had a car that I could drive everyday w/o worrying about it. I get anxiety just thinking about parking it at the community college. My daily driver is a 92 Chevy S-10 and is not super gas friendly. I’d like to drive a more gas friendly commuter.
I love the R yet I hate it at the same time. I've already had a car stolen (GSR) and I know the bitter taste it leaves. The caR sits at my parent’s house which is about a 40 minute drive. If I want to drive it or do any work on it I have to have at least 3 hours of free time. If I owned my own garage and was able to play with it anytime then it would be a different story.
Should I just ride it out for the time being, say what the hell and use it as a daily driver, or consider selling it?
I bought the car 3/5/4
I have yet to take it to a track/autox
Another question is if I do sell the R: should I go the responsible route and buy a 3-5k car and save the rest of the money. After I’m done with school and get a career going then buy a nice car? It would be another 2-4 years until I get a career. It would be hard for me to not enjoy the fruits of my labor. Or should I use the money I’ll have after selling it ++ and buy a pretty decent car, around $16k-ish (maybe a higher mileage E36 M)?
I’m feeling stressed about the situation. My best friend and my parents are encouraging me to sell it and buy a car to get around town. I know ultimately that if I did spend $16k on another car they would continue to support me though, which doesn’t help my situation. My co-workers (adults) and other friends are telling me to keep it as I’ve done a lot to get it. They don’t quite understand the drama that follows owning an R though.
I apologize for the extra long thread. I’ve had this topic on my mind for over a month now. I’m just interested in what other R owners are doing and feel on this subject.

350/month is absurd in my opinion, and so is a $1000 deductible, try finding a better plan maybe? Is the S-10 insured as the primary car? and the ITR as the weekend car or whatever they call it?
i suggest you find another insurance plan, or maybe switch the primary....don't sell the R for anything similar or less..who knows it might be the best car u ever owned. I suggest you sell the car when you get sick of it or like you said got your career going and buy a better car all together, good luck.
you are not alone on the anxiety part, as i too unfortunately cannot even consider using the R as a daily mule, although i wish i could enjoy her everyday
the reality is, owning this car comes with a lot of baggage, and many r owners like you deal with the same issues more or less everyday. i have a clean driving record, thank god, but i too just like everyone else pay premium for insurance still. is it worth keeping and worrying over? for me it is...most good things in life are somewhat sweeter when earned thru hard work and a little sacrifice. from what you wrote, it sounds like you understand this too, but you should do what best fits your life at the moment.
i'd call around for other insurance quotes and exercise every option out there available for you, and i believe that if you really wanted to keep the car bad enough, you would find a way, i would.

I pay about $265 on the R and $70ish on the S-10. I partly fooked up and got the title in my name making me the primary driver on the R. I'm a secondary on the S-10. I need to become the secondary on both (if possible), which I’m working on. By giving my dad the title he’ll become the primary and then I can become secondary. The problem is I’ve herd that they stopped doing gifts and now you have to pay tax. There is no way I’m going to pay like $1,400 in tax again. I’ve also herd, you can say you paid $100 for it but they have a book that they use to check the market value. I’m not sure how it’s going to go if I can’t work it as a gift.
My deductible right now it's pretty bling bling at $100. I know I can reduce the monthly amount to $190's once I am a secondary driver and play with the deductible premiums.
The ITR for me is a weekend car but I asked if I could have it listed as a pleasure vehicle or what not but they said I'm too young
Perhaps my dad can have it as a pleasure vehicle if he becomes primary driver?
The funny thing is the S-10 is my dad's so it's good in a way that I didn't have to pay for it. But bad b/c I can't sell it and get a more gas efficient car.
I am sharing a multi-line discount with my parents. I have good student discount and for some odd reason they are giving me a break at age 21 on top of age 25! I’ve done a small amount of searching but as of right now I feel my current insurance is still my best option.
Thanks for the fast replies
BTW: SoCal ITR your sig just makes me feel that much more confused, lol. If only you saw the pictures of my ex-GSR. Memories like that just stick with you. Total chop shop job, done in 24 hrs. Cut the front end of the car off. *edit* Ah, here we go http://www.we-todd-did-racing....D.jpg
I just can’t bear the thought of that happening to my R.
