painting car, what to do about trim on crx?
im going to paint my crx. but i dont know what to do about the trim on the sides. has anyone did this before. whad u do bout the trim . its going to be j-spec silver gun metal. i think, its gunna be cool... i hope, if not im screwed. also anyone selling jdm front end and rear for a 91 crx
. if so sell it to me.
. if so sell it to me.
depends on if you want the trim to be same color of the car or not... It is all removeable and putting it back is just as easy just remember to buy new clips or the moldings will be loose and can fall off... IMO i would remove the trim then paint the car then put the trim back into place.
i had my car painted a year ago, i personally think that most newer updated cars have a "one-color" look, and so with that, i just told them to paint all the car one color, over the modlings and all, and it turned out great, i picked a dark blue from a 2000 VW Jetta paint code called Atlantic Blue, and i am satisfied and it has'nt chipped, but you might want to ask about having them add "flex-additives" (kind of like a primer for painting on plastic parts so it won't chip later)
but to me i sometimes miss the stock look of a crx with the black moldings, i don't know why, but if i were rich i would have a one-colored crx, and also have a stock mint condition one with black moldings, and one for track and one for show

Take off the moldings, weld shut the holes. They only take in water, and rust the **** out of your doors.
Most new cars have "stick on" door molds. Most are a bit flatter. and NEW. Often a bit softer too. Also because they're stick on, you can take them off.
If you really want to go to town, you could have the door flattened where the moldings were. But it looks ok with the moldings just taken off.

i don't know where you get flex additives, someone just told me once that its some type of primer stuff or something that helps to prevent chipping on painted plastic parts. actually i don't even think maaco used it on mine (don't get off on a maaco rant, cause i know how they are, but i did'nt have a bad experience with them)
i wish i could of done what SETI said, but i just did'nt want to do all that work, i was in a rush to just get my car painted, cause it had a black fender and hood on a white car, and just looked embarrassing, so i just wanted it painted quick, and when i think of it now, the hardest decision for me to make was about the moldings and whether i should have them painted or not, but i think i was forced to paint mine, cause i messed them up when prepping and sanding the car, and got them all marked up with white scuff marks, so i really had no choice, cause it would of looked like crap if i left the moldings all scuffed like that.
and as far as how long it will last on the moldings, i really don't know, i have only had it one year so far, and hopefully it will last, otherwise i'll just touch it up.
before getting it painted,
i was just thinking how most newer cars like 99 integras and such all have a one color paintjob without any black moldings, and to me it kind of looks cleaner and more up to date, so thats kind of why i decided to paint them, but people don't recommend it, even the paint shop told me i should'nt, but i told them to do it anyway, but i have talked to people who had it painted and they said its been on 4 years and have'nt chipped yet, but also told me to get either the ultra-urethane package or higher (at maaco), and if i got the cheaper package such as presidential or supreme, then it would'nt hold as good.
sorry for typing so much, i am at work, and its slow and borring here and i had caffeine

i'd leave the trim black, looks clean and keeps the nice lines of the car intact. it will look more like a crx that has been well taken care instead of a crx that has been repainted.
my ufcked up opinion, let your heart lead the way to your decisions.

looks good. were did u get the front end from? how long have u had it painted for? did u do anything to the trim to make paint stick to it?

you find the substance at a paint supply store like wesco or the place of your preference. It's a liquid that u mix in with the primer or paint or both (forget which one) and you use it to spray pieces of the car that flex (bumper, moldings, rear bumper, sideskirts, etc). so that say someone sits on your bumper and it flex's, you wont get stress marks all over or say you scrape your bumper on a speedbump and it bends it back, the paint doesnt start chipping off. Or say you get a dent somehow, well with out the flex additives, the paint could chip around the dent then moisture could lead to rusting of that panel, but with the F.A.'s the paint should incave with the dent so no metals exposed. All it does is allow the paint to bend instead of cracking.

personally i cant stand painted moldings on a 88-91 crx or civic . i had a crx about a year ago . the paint was messed up so i jus went to the auto store and bought a few cams of spray paint primer . i still took the time to mask everything off before i painted it , moldings and all . looked pretty good for a spray can job .
