I didn't have to remove my bumper on my 98 coupe or my friend's eg hatch.

You could remove it without taking the bumper off. There was a thread about this a while ago, i think it was titled "steps to removing ac" something like that (to tired to search for it)

i am pretty sure you can do it without removing your bumper. taking your bumper off might make it a bit easier however, but i dont think it is necessary

yeah, it would make it a little easier to work with and get around, and also helps avoid scratches on the bumper too

no bumper does not need to be taken off, everything is accesable w/ out taking the bumper off. the battery and tray will ahve to be removed along w/ the intake, and a few other things but mainly a straightforward thing. also if your not EPA certifyed don't **** w/ refrigerant if it is charged it is ILLEGAL to vent it into the atmosphere and if you get caught it is a heafty fine.

Just curious why don't you want to take the bumper off? it takes 3 minutes.
