Shoot, you can have the ring gear and countershaft changed out in a day. I reccomend keeping the USDM tranny, the JDM tranny with the 4.785 has the longer GSR 4th and 5th also which is kinda boring... only thing is that first gear is kinda unusable. Its still the 3.23 and over there the ITR has a 16" wheel as you know... I would reccomend the ATS 3.077 first gear they sell. Its a countershaft plug and play affair. That combo with the 4.785 you only lose 2mph in first and makes the 1-2 shift closer so you can come out of the hole harder if you like that kinda thing...
while you are in there you could change the 3-4 synchro set to freshen it up. All that shouldnt cost more than $850 for parts and youll have a killer setup for the street/track.
