Suspension Woes 89si/90si *Is my mechanic wrong* ???
I bought an 89 Crx Si as a parts car because it was lowerred, slipstreams and the interior was perfect but the body was shot. SO I buy a 90 Crx Si hoping I could swap everything over.
Now I go to the mechanics to ask him if he would be able to swap the stock 90Si springs/shocks onto the old car and take the good **** and put it on the new car.
Now he said he couldnt do it because it was the way something was mounted, one was on the inside on 1 car and on the outside on the other or something.
Now my parts car is in a field so I cant just take a peek, but does anyone know what the difference is or why it cant be done cause I need to lower this new car and was about to order new springs.
There both Canadian Si's if that makes a difference
Thanks

Uhm from what I know you CAN swap the suspension parts over, the chassis should be the same. A crx is what you take disc brakes off of to install disc on the rear of the Si hatch, atleast thats what I am told. Double check with another mechanic, or try it yourself. Whats the worse that could happen, it doesnt fit and you have to reinstall your old setup?
But ya I do believe your mech is in the wrong, he might be trying to get out of a job he doesnt want to do or something. lol

Sounds like you might have 88 rear lca s on one car, the shock goes inside the lca on the 88, and the 89+ go on the outside. Could be what he was talking about.
Are you 100% positive both cars are what year you say they are.
Most likely your "parts" car is an 88, it has different rear suspension.

Well Im looking at the title and ownership of the parts car and it says its an 89
Even if it was swapped with an 88 lower control arm couldnt I take that lower control arm and put it on the 90 and the springs/shocks would work?

Yes. Get a new mechanic, or better yet do it yourself, save some $$.

I would do it myself but I dont have a lift or any air tools
So "if" the 89 parts car now has an 88 lca's (both front and rear right??) I can just put the 88 lcas on the 90 car and the whole spring shocks combo will be good?
BUT
If they both are stock 89/90 lcas then it should swap no problem?

I figured when I tried to drop the car down, the front bumper would get caught on the jack, I can get it under by an inch or so now, but when I install the new suspension it would be 2.5 lower or so..... front bumpers moulded 2 so I cant take it off

Blocks, I use peices of 2x4 wood. Place them under the tire when you lower the car back down with the jack, yank the jack out, drive the car off them.. If your car is lower than a 2 inch peice of wood, you have problems..

ok.. this info is for Si's only.
88-91 Front suspension all interchangeable.
88 Rear suspension has the odd ball LCA (lower control arm).
you can swap the 88 and 89-91 LCA between each other.
if you have 88 LCA on your 89 Si you can swap those and the shocks over to the 90.

You don't need a lift OR air tools. For you, 4 jackstands, 1 jack, and 1 good set of metric sockets will do the job.
If the 89 has 88 LCA's, the only part you worry about are the rears. The only thing that changes is the way the shock mounts on the LCA. On an 88, the shock will have an eyelet that a bolt will pass through, where on the 89, the shock will have a bottom that is forked and goes OVER and AROUND the LCA.
If both cars have the same style rear LCA, you don't worry about anything - just a straight swap. Easy as pie, front and rear.

what is it that you want to change over? "just to lower it" meaning you want to get the springs/coilovers from the wreck car on to your working crx?? maybe the shocks too?? which i wouldnt do cuz they might be blown if the car was lower already..
if so !! just switch the springs/coilovers.. wutever it has. so u can lower your working crx.

Mechanic is wrong either get another one or start DIY will save money and later on you will realize that it was a stupid idea to get a mechanic in the first place. Just a Haynes manual and tools and patience and swap the suspension over 88 civic/crx are the only ones different from 89-91 so it should fit.
First of all, You want to really find out what the car really is. Drop a VIN# and you can check out what the true year is. But yeah 88 are totally different due to the Control arm Eye attachment compared tot he 89-91 Fork attachment. However you can always switch the LCA off the 89-91 on the 88 back vica versa to make the shock fit. Good luck!
