pics of my homemade skid plate
Me and a buddy made the skid plate out of 1/4 steel (thickest piece of metal on any import i've scene!) to protect my downpipe because it hangs real low. This thing is bomb proof. Literally. We jacked the car up by it just to make sure its worthy
and it barely even flexed. Its welded to the crossmember brace (as seen in one of the pics) then bolted to the front crossmember. We welded another small plate to the crossmember so we had something to bolt to.
The bends were done by making small cuts, bending to desired location, and filling them in with weld. Worked quite well. I've looked into skid plates that can be purchased, but they were mostly for N/A header setups. Plus the skid plate attached to the header directly, meaning the shock of the hit would still put stress on manifold studs ect.
With mine, the shock is absorbed by the frame itself. Now I just chuckle when I hear anything scrape in the front end.
PS: notice the cut out of the stock crossmember in the first pic so the dp will clear... and the nice juicy plate welded back in to strengthen it back up
Here are the pics.....

In this pic, the plate isn't quite finished, still had to fill in a weld.

Oh and here are a couple bonus pics of my buddys 1940 ford pickup, he's the one who helped me out with the welding.
Built 350, 15 psi

Sweet piece of innovation... I've been wanting to do that to protect mine, as well... My car is SUPA low.. the 3" DP is the lowest part, to boot!
The plate definitly calms my nerves, I'd rather hit the plate 1000 times than hit the downpipe once. All it would take is one unfamiliar parking lot, or an unexpected dip or rock in the road.

Well, you can put one mount on the header bracket... a second one maybe between the a/c bracket and the block? (depending on how thick it is and wether or not the belt can be loosened to make fit. A third could go where the flywheel cover bolts are...
It can be done, and I plan to do it. Won't be nearly as pretty as the one pictured in this thread tho.

lol, my car is raised as far as my skunk2 coils will let me, and the dp still sits low. I love scraping the skid plate, makes me all giddy inside

I've thought about a while ago, thanks for reminding me I need to make one for my new dp. It makes sense to protect the dp, besides the hassle of making a new one they're also not cheap to replace. Yours came out great
