Default helicoil ?

I decided I am gonna try helicoil on my stripped front motor mount hole. I know its 12mm-1.25. So do i buy the helicoil kit for the same size or a bigger size. I am under the impression i buy the 12mm-1.25 kit but I am not sure.

Bigger size. It has to be bigger to compensate for the material you will be removing.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by matix &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I thought i just get the same size it was before so i can use the same bolt i was using before.</TD></TR></TABLE>Yes. The inside of the HeliCoil is the same size as the original bolt hole. So you use the same bolt. But the OUTSIDE of the HeliCoil is bigger to account for the material that's gone.

BTW, 12mm x 1.50 isn't bigger. 12mm x 1.25 and 12mm x 1.50 are the same size with different thread pitch.

You want to buy the kit that is the SAME SIZE/PITCH as the hole that is stripped.

The kit uses an insert that is larger, but it sells them buy the thread size you are trying to repair.

StyleTEG is right....you buy the kit for the exact size of the bolt. When you install the Helicoil you will have to drill and tap a bigger hole in which the helicoil is inserted into...thus make the hole the original size. This way you can use the stock bolt.

PS...I got my set at NAPA.....you might want to also buy the drill bit they specify on the package(Has to be that exact size)....it was only a few dollars more while I was at NAPA. Oh and also make sure you have some tap oil handy.

Good Luck

Putting a thick grease on the drill bit and tap also is a good way to pick up most of the metal shavings. Makes getting all the shavings out a bit easier ;-)

if you just screw in the tap and then unscrew it over and over again until you get to the desired depth. When you unscrew it each time it will remove the shavings..... rather then using grease
