I don't think having the hole would cause it to sputter.

If you've got a stock engine, I'd replace whatever piping is leaking and call it a day.

you can buy a muffler and have a muffler shop weld it in and they can replace any piping that needs it. you can also find cheap catback systems on ebay

IMO get a RS*R Exmag Catback exhaust for your DX. (http://www.rs-r.com/exmag.htm) or you can just get a muffler and have a muffler shop custom weld a mendrel bent tube to a muffler but that always comes with the con of being "Loud and ricey"

If the hole is after the muffler and not on the muffler, why are you replacing the muffler?

http://www.summitracing.com has a wide selection of mufflers that don't cost $600.

btw, whoever told you that "they don't make many just mufflers" was full of ****.

I've had good luck with Borla mufflers and not so good luck with other ones. After having two non-OEM mufflers explode on me in the past year, I really would just leave the stock one on there and wait until you do an engine swap and need to increase the diameter of the exhuast before playing with the muffler.
