'99 V6 valve adjustment
my dad's car is a 99 accord V6 and the engine is ticking really bad when his car is cold and goes away when it warms up. I know its the valves...but i need to know how to do a valve adjustment on the V6 model...i've done it in my h22 prelude but i havn't done it yet on his V6. Does anyone have a write up or any information. I've tried searching but found nothing. TIA!
maybe the valves are self adjusting or never need adjusting at all. All honda's tap loud during cold startup especially with alot of miles. normal behavior possibly.

i already know the specs for the valves, but i dont think that the manual would have instructions on how to do a valve adjustment

The same as a four cylinder, just more stuff to remove to get to them.

stupid question but, i've never done any engine work to his V6, so i'm not sure how to get to the cams or valves...i've only done suspension work on his car. are there 2 valve covers underneath the plastic piece on the top of the motor?

Yes, there is an intake manifold under there too. It needs to come off also. Like I said, more stuff to remove than a four cylinder.

I DONT KNOW WHAT THE MILEAGE IS ON YOUR HONDA ACCORD V6, HOWEVER
HONDA RECOMEDS ADJUSTING THE VALVES @ 105,000 MILES. THE VALVE LASH SPEC SHOULD BE LISTED ON A STICKER UNDER THE HOOD. THERE ARE PLASTIC COVERS THAT NEED TO BE REMOVED AND THAT SHOULD GIVE YOU ACCESS TO THE VALVE COVERS. USE A FEELER GUAGE TO ADJUST THE LASH.

First off, you should buy a service manual for this car.
ADJUST THE VALVES WHEN THE CYLINDER HEAD TEMP. IS LESS THAN 100 DEGREES!
1.Remove the throttle body cover, ignition wire cover and intake manifold covers.
2.Remove the EVAP control canister hose from the throttle body.
3.Remove the vacume hose and breather pipe, then remove the intake air duct.
4.Remove the throttle cable and cruise comtrol cable by loosening the locknuts, then slip the cable ends out of the accelerator linkage. Take care not to bend the cables when removing them.
5.Remove the brake booster vacume hose, and PCV hose.
6.Remove the breather hose and water bypass hoses.
7.Remove the intake manifold. (replace gaskets)
8.Remove the cylinder head covers. (replace with new gaskets/seals)
9.Remove the front upper cover.
10.Set the no. 1 piston at TDC. align the pointer on the back cover with no. 1 piston TDC mark on the front camshaft pulley.
11.Select the correct thickness feeler gauge for the valves you are going to check.(No. 1 cyl.)
INTAKE: .20-.24 mm (.008-.009")
EXHAUST: .28-.32 mm (.011-.013")
12 Insert the feeler gauge between the adjusting screw and the end of the valve stem and slide it back and forth, you should feel a slight amount of drag.
13. If you feel too much or too little drag, loosen the locknut and turn the adjusting screw until the drag on the feeler gauge is correct.
14.Tighten the locknut and recheck the clearance. Repeat the adjustment if necessary.
15.Rotate the crank clockwise. Align the pointer on the back of the cover with the no. 4 piston TDC mark on the front camshaft pulley.
16. Check and adjust the clearance on no. 4 cyl.
17. Rotate the crank clockwise and align the no. 2 TDC mark on the front cam pulley.
18. Check and adjust the valves on no.2 cyl.
19. Rotate the crank clockwise and align the no.5 TDC mark on the front cam pulley.
20 Check and adjust the valves on no. 5 cyl.
21. Rotate the crank clockwise and align the no. 3 TDC mark on the front cam pulley.
22. Check and adjust the valves on no. 3 cyl.
23. Rotate the crank clockwise and align the no. 6 TDC mark on the front cam pulley.
24. Check and adjust the valves on no. 6 cyl
25. Reinstall all parts mentioned ealier with new gaskets or seals as needed.
