Default Y8 in a 90 hf

My brother in-law is about to get rid of his 98 y8 and I'm thinking about buying it. But the problem is that I dont now if the motor will bolt right onto my HF tranny and will the ECU plug right into the harness. Will I need a new tranny for this swap and will I have to do any wiring for the ECU? (My car is a cable clutch.)

Thanks

Do some basic research. There are plenty of write ups on sohc vtec motors in crx's. Google is your friend.

Yes - it will bolt onto your HF tranny. The only thing I am uncertain of is if you have to use your stock HF flywheel and clutch on the engine. I believe the 88/89 have a different spline count and a smaller clutch than the 90~??. I really don't know what the HF has. You 'll have to check into that.

For about $250 more (could cost you LOTS less if you search around for a deal) you can get yourself a set of DX/Si (either will work) knuckles, some remanufactured axles, and a Si tranny. That would make your swap much more apealling.
EDIT - you could stay with the HF knuckles and axles, but as long as you are in there....

You would probably want to do a clutch change at this time as well regardless of what flywheel/clutch combo you have to use. A stock replacement should be fine.

The HF is already set up for MPFI so you don't have to deal with the "DX to ZC" or "DX to MPFI" or "DPFI to MPFI" conversion.

You will have the option to either stay OBD0 or upgrade to OBD1. The Y8 is OBD2, but those ECU's are no fun so most people go for the OBD1 so they have a wide variety of ECU mods available to them. For low cash situations, you can get away with using the OBD0 ECU from an A6 motor (Si ECU). You will also need to add in an RPM acticvated switch or a VTEC controller to utilize VTEC. Going OBD1 takes care of this for you as the P28 ECU is made for VTEC. An OBD1 conversion can cost just about a much as a new Apex'i VTEC controller if you are able to find the P28 ECU for a good price.

If you stay ODB0 you will need to use the distributor from your car or one from the 88~91 Si. Ditch the resistor box if you use the Y8 injectors.

If you go OBD1 then you can use the Y8 distributor.

Either way you will need to use the HF engine harness. You "could" use the Y8 engine harness, but it's NOT worth all the headaches. It's totally different and will require lots of wiring. Using the HF harness will be a very small fraction of wiring in comparison.

Lot of options to deal with, huh???!!!

Personally, if it were me, I would put that motor in the garage and start collecting parts. Get everything you need to make the Si tranny work. The HF tranny sucks sweaty hairy left dog *********. I would also go for the OBD1 conversion.
