Default Shopping for a Ninja 250 R

I've wanted a motorcycle since I a kid. My dad has always owned one for as long as I can remember. I have been waiting until I thought I was self sufficent enough to buy one for myself and since I just got a new job I think its time. There is a 2003 Ninja 250 R in the local news paper and after checking into it, I think its a good deal. Its got 2800 miles and has never been dropped. The guy who owns it now purchased it new from the dealership and has been the only owner. The only mods to the bike are a set of "carbon fiber turn signals". The asking price is $2500 but he said it was negotiable.

I'm not really looking for a speed demon or anything, and I don't expect this bike to be one. I'm just interested in getting something to start out with. I've never driven a bike, but have been on the back of them most of my life. I think its about time I got in the drivers seat. I'm right at 6' and about 145lbs if that makes any kind of difference to you guys.

My question is, does this sound like a good deal for the bike? Its described as MINT and from the mileage I'm guessing it hasn't been ridden too much. TIA for helping out the nOOb!

$2500 for a 2003 sounds really good. 250s are supposed to be really great starter bikes.

Sounds good considering that new ones go for about $3500 OTD after they rape you with the taxes and fees. Im around your size(weigh a little less) and I love my 250 as a starter bike

It sounds like this is a pretty good deal then. I'm gonna offer him 2k just to see what he says. I'll be checking in with the Insurance company today to see what my rates are gonna be, and then checking on a loan at the bank I work for.

Hey guys, I just figured I'd update. I got the bike day before yesterday and got my tags and everything today. I went for my first drive today. I'm hooked man. What an awesome feeling. I can't wait to put some more miles on it tomorrow. I'll get some pics of my new gear and the bike on here soon enough. This is so awesome!

awsome to hear man. i got my 2001 250 ninja for $2000 with 3737 mieles on it. ive now got about 7200 miles on it and have had it for maybe 2 or 3 months. i plan on getting a muzzy for it and some K&N air pods, woodcraft risers, eliminate the rear fender, put a 500R rear shock on it, progressive front springs, white face indiglo gauges, stainless steel brake lines, and a pirelli MT75 rear tire to match my new front one. i love the way this small bike handles and would like just a little more power out of it.

Good deal and nice starter bike, the dealer I went to managed to talk me into a 600RR so thats my ride, it's gorgous and dives into corners even with my wife on the back. I'm a new rider so I'll be the first to welcome you to a new feeling in life.

Wow. Sounds like you've got some pretty big plans for it. I've got the fender eliminator and some aftermarket blinkers. But no more. I really need to get some new tires on this thing. The ones on there now just don't feel like they are gripping the road like they should. I dunno. Any forums you're going to or anything? I think I'd kinda be interested in some of those mods.

The only problem I'm having now is when I hit a big enough bump, like a railroad track or something, the tire hits the liscence plate and bends it towards the front. Talk about annoying!

Have you ever rode a 500cc or up...huge difference not only in speed and acceleration, but it handles way better. Dont waste your money on trying to make that 250 better, get good on that 250 then upgrade to something that you are going to want to keep for a while. Just my $0.02, but if you are content on a 250 then I guess do what you do. Good luck either way
